DiskSorter is Windows file-classification software for analyzing local disks, directories, network shares, NAS devices and enterprise storage. It is aimed at individuals and organizations that need to understand how files are distributed, then organize selected categories or retain reports for comparison. Classification can be based on file type, extension, user, and creation, modification or access date. For teams that need detailed file-type reports on Windows, its range of classification attributes and output options are central strengths.

Reporting goes beyond a summary of file counts: DiskSorter can generate charts and reports in HTML, PDF, Excel, text, CSV, JSON and XML, export results to SQL databases, and support historical trend analysis. That makes the product relevant when teams need reports in different formats or want to compare classification results over time. It can also copy or move files into category-based directory structures. However, this is file classification and organization rather than sensitive-data discovery or duplicate cleanup; those needs point toward a different tool.

Edition choice determines how classification runs and is managed. Pro is a single-host license with email support, while support and updates depend on the selected license term. Ultimate adds both a desktop GUI and command-line utility, also under a single-host license. Server is a $250 one-time license with a background service and scheduled and batch classification; Enterprise costs $450 one time and adds a web-based management interface, alongside scheduled and batch classification. Server editions support periodic and parallel jobs. DiskSorter is a fit for Windows teams that value report depth and scheduled work across storage; teams needing sensitive-data scanning, duplicate detection or another operating system should look elsewhere.

DiskSorter pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Recognizes more than 3,500 file types and classifies by attributes.
    • Exports reports in seven formats and to SQL databases.
    • Server editions add scheduled and parallel classification for shares and NAS.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Windows-only deployment limits cross-platform use.
    • No sensitive-data scanning or duplicate detection.
    • Server and Enterprise licenses are one-time purchases at $250 and $450, respectively.
