Demeter is an open-source Python package for turning Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM) land-allocation projections into gridded land-use and land-cover change products. It is intended for Earth-system modeling workflows that need spatially disaggregated projections, including users who supply observed and projected land-allocation CSV files. The package supports Linux, Windows, and macOS through self-hosted deployment, and its API exposes functions such as get_package_data and run_model.

Its standout capability is configurable spatial allocation. Users can set spatial resolution, apply constraints such as soil-quality weighting, and use kernel-density weighting for expansion. Demeter also lets modelers define transition priority and land-class treatment order, then adjust stochastic expansion and intensification parameters. These controls make the package suitable for scenarios where allocation rules and uncertainty need to be expressed explicitly rather than treated as fixed defaults. Results can be exported as tabular CSV, transition CSV, or NetCDF files for downstream analysis.

Demeter’s ecosystem fit is deliberately narrow: its listed integration is GCAM, so it is most appropriate when GCAM projections are the starting point. Installation is handled through GitHub, followed by CSV inputs and a configuration file, with execution performed programmatically in Python. Documentation and community channels provide the stated support model. Choose Demeter when a research workflow needs reproducible, configurable conversion from GCAM allocations to gridded outputs; choose another simulation tool when the project requires broader simulation paradigms, hosted deployment, or a wider integration ecosystem.

Demeter pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Converts GCAM land allocations into gridded LULCC products
    • Configurable constraints, transition priorities, and stochastic parameters
    • Exports tabular, transition, and NetCDF outputs via a Python API
  • Where it doesn't
    • Focused on GCAM-derived land-allocation workflows
    • Requires self-hosted Python setup and programmatic execution
    • Outputs center on land-use grids rather than broad simulation types
