Our verdict on DEGIRO

DEGIRO is an execution-only online broker for independent investors who make their own investment decisions. Its web platform and iOS and Android apps provide access to shares, ETFs, bonds, options, futures and investment funds across more than 45 markets in 30 countries. It is aimed at people who want to manage their own trades rather than receive advice or delegated portfolio management. The broker was founded in 2009 and is operated by flatexDEGIRO Bank SE, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main; DEGIRO was founded in Amsterdam.

Access spans listed exchanges including NASDAQ, NYSE, Toronto Stock Exchange, London Stock Exchange and Euronext markets. Order options include market, limit, stop-loss and stop-limit orders, plus selected trailing-stop orders. Charts, financial information, portfolio and position tracking, favourites lists, investment notes, market overviews, an economic calendar and financial news support research and account monitoring. Two-factor authentication and biometric sign-in options are available. This breadth may suit investors seeking traditional assets across markets; the product does not include paper trading, so it is less suited to someone who wants a simulated environment to practise before placing trades.

Opening an account is free and there is no monthly service fee, but brokerage transactions and other charges may apply under the fee schedule. That makes checking applicable costs important for investors whose trading frequency or choice of products could affect what they pay. DEGIRO does not provide investment advice or portfolio management, and demo accounts are not available. Choose it if you are comfortable making investment decisions independently and want browser or mobile access to a broad set of traditional assets. Look elsewhere if you need advice, managed portfolios or practice trading before committing funds.
