Deepgram Aura review
A developer-focused speech synthesis API, not a transcription service.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Deepgram Aura is an API-based text-to-speech service for developers building voice assistants, conversational AI applications, and voice agents. It converts submitted text into streamed audio through REST or streaming endpoints, with selectable Aura voice models and configurable audio output. Startups, growing applications, and enterprise teams can use it across cloud, private-cloud, and on-premises deployments. It is suited to speech generation rather than buyers seeking transcription capabilities.
Aura uses paid, usage-based plans. Pay As You Go — Aura-1 has no minimums and no expiration. Growth — Aura-1 is priced at $0.0135 per 1,000 characters with usage billing; it includes pre-paid credits for the year, credits redeemed against actual usage, and savings of up to 20%. The service offers no free plan. For teams assessing voice-generation costs, the distinction is between flexible usage and an annual pre-paid credit model, rather than fixed user-based tiers.
The standout capability is control over generated audio: speaking speed, pronunciation overrides, audio encoding, containers, and sample rates are configurable. Aura-2 extends the model family to seven languages, while the first-generation Aura model supports English. Developers can access the service through an API or self-hosted deployments, and supported output includes linear16, mulaw, alaw, MP3, Ogg Opus, FLAC, and AAC formats. Choose Aura for programmable speech synthesis and deployment flexibility; choose a transcription-focused product instead when converting recorded or live speech into text is the primary requirement.
