Dapr review
A self-hosted workflow runtime for durable, event-driven microservice processes.

Dapr is an open-source distributed application runtime for building durable workflows and distributed applications across Kubernetes, virtual machines, bare-metal environments, cloud, and edge deployments. It is aimed at teams orchestrating microservice processes that need persisted state, recovery, human approvals, external-event waits, retries, timers, fan-out/fan-in, compensation, and workflow versioning. Applications connect through HTTP or gRPC APIs, with SDKs for several programming languages.
Workflow depth is Dapr’s strongest fit for long-running business processes. Durable execution uses persisted state and recovery, while cryptographically verifiable workflow histories support traceability. OpenTelemetry-based tracing and observability provide visibility into workflow behavior. The runtime also includes service-to-service invocation, publish/subscribe messaging, state management, and pluggable components. Integrations with Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, KEDA, GitHub Actions, Argo CD, Redis, PostgreSQL, Cosmos DB, and OpenTelemetry support cloud-native deployment patterns.
Dapr follows an open-source model rather than a conventional SaaS pricing structure. Deployment is self-hosted, and the published product model does not provide hosted tiers or plan-based quotas. The documented default workflow concurrency is unlimited unless configured. That approach suits engineering teams that want control over deployment, state components, APIs, and platform integration. Teams seeking a managed workflow service with vendor-operated infrastructure should choose an alternative. Dapr is also a better fit for organizations that need workflow orchestration alongside distributed-application capabilities than for projects requiring only a small, focused scheduling tool.
Dapr pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Durable execution with recovery, retries, timers, and compensation
- Human approvals, external events, and workflow versioning
- HTTP/gRPC APIs with Kubernetes and cloud ecosystem integrations
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment requires your team to operate the runtime
- No conventional SaaS plans or hosted deployment option
- Its broad runtime scope may exceed the needs of simple workflow projects
