Our verdict on cycleCAD

cycleCAD is browser-based, open-source parametric 3D CAD software for designers, makers, and CNC shops. It runs without installation or an account, and its scope extends from sketching and solid modeling to assemblies and AI-assisted geometry generation. Developers building parametric CAD through a web API are the clearest fit; teams that depend on desktop-centered workflows or cloud collaboration should look elsewhere.

The modeling toolkit is broad for a browser product. Sketches have 13 tools and 12 constraint types, while B-rep solid modeling uses OpenCascade.js. Operations include extrude, revolve, sweep, loft, fillet, chamfer, shell, pattern, hole, thread, mirror, draft, scale, combine, split, and boolean operations. For assemblies, cycleCAD provides seven joint types and mate constraints, plus interference checking, contact sets, motion study, explode, and collapse tools. The AI Copilot generates geometry from natural-language prompts. This breadth makes the product more than a sketch-to-solid tool, though conventional desktop users may find its browser and API orientation a poor fit.

Automation is a defining strength: the 55-command JSON-RPC Agent API gives developers a route to work with CAD operations programmatically. Models can be converted and exported as STEP, IGES, and GLB; Inventor IAM and IPJ are listed for import. That format set is useful for exchange, but users who need other export formats should consider alternatives. The product is distributed under the MIT license, which may suit teams seeking open-source software. Choose cycleCAD for browser-based parametric modeling and API-driven workflows; avoid it if cloud collaboration or a more conventional desktop CAD workflow is central to the requirement.
