Our verdict on ColorZilla
ColorZilla is a free Chrome extension for web developers and graphic designers who need to inspect and work with colors on webpages. Its tools cover sampling, color selection, page analysis and CSS gradients, with palettes and a history of sampled or selected colors. That makes it a focused fit for individual practitioners and small teams whose color work happens in Chrome, rather than a general-purpose design application.
Sampling and inspection are its clearest strengths. The eyedropper can sample pixels or areas on a webpage, with multiple sampling sizes and average color sampling. A webpage color analyzer inspects DOM element colors and displays an element's tag, class, ID and dimensions. The color picker has adjustable components, and sampled values can be copied automatically in selectable formats. Keyboard shortcuts support sampling page colors. Together, these features connect a picked color to the page element it came from, which is useful when translating visual references into CSS work.
For follow-on work, the extension includes a CSS gradient generator, a palette viewer with seven built-in palettes, and a history palette for sampled and selected colors. ColorZilla is Chrome-only, so it is not a fit for workflows that require other browsers. The vendor says the extension needs access to websites to pick colors and states that it does not collect browsing activity. Buyers looking for a specialized browser-based color toolkit may find the combination practical; those needing a broader design workflow should consider a different kind of product.
