Code_Aster is EDF R&D’s open-source finite element solver for numerical simulation of structures and materials. It is aimed at researchers and engineers working across energy, nuclear, civil engineering, transport, and aerospace, with company-size fit spanning small teams through enterprise. The software supports desktop and self-hosted deployment on Linux and Windows, and is distributed under the GNU GPL at no cost.

Its main strength is analytical breadth. Code_Aster covers linear and nonlinear static mechanics, dynamic and vibration analysis, thermal and thermo-mechanical calculations, geomechanics, soil-structure interaction, acoustics, seismic assessment, fatigue, fracture, fluid-structure interaction, and limit-state work. Adaptive mesh and mesh-refinement workflows support demanding studies, while sensitivity calculations, parameter fitting, optimization, and Python-based automation extend it beyond one-off solves. HPC support and integrations with MUMPS, PETSc, and MFront add options for computational and material-model workflows.

The product is a solver rather than a complete geometry-to-results application. Built-in meshing is not part of Code_Aster; Salome-Meca supplies an integrated environment for geometry, meshing, calculation, and post-processing, while command-based workflows remain available. Support is provided through documentation and community channels, so teams should be comfortable managing a technical, self-hosted workflow. Code_Aster fits structural groups that value broad analysis capabilities, open-source access, and automation. Teams seeking built-in meshing inside the solver, AI features, or a more packaged onboarding experience should consider another CAE platform.
