Our verdict on CODAP

CODAP gives students and educators a web-based space to explore data by arranging records in tables and creating graphs and maps. It is designed especially for learners in grades 5–14, and is also used by curriculum developers and education researchers. Its emphasis is on learning by working with datasets and visual representations, rather than following a guided statistics course. The main web app is free, open source, and does not require an account to use.

Linked graphs, maps, and tables highlight related data, helping learners examine how a selection or pattern appears across different representations. Users can import data from a file, paste from a spreadsheet, use a URL, or enter it manually, and can inspect individual records as case cards. Plugins extend exploration with random-sampling simulations through Sampler and dataset or value transformations through Transformers. Simulations or games that generate data can also be embedded, while Story Builder creates interactive presentations from data representations. This makes CODAP a fit for lessons centered on investigation and visualization; those seeking a more guided sequence of statistics instruction may prefer a tool built around structured lessons.

CODAP is available as a cloud-based web app and lists Google Drive among its integrations. Documentation and community channels provide its support options. Curriculum and structured lessons are available among CODAP resources, but the product should not be assumed to include classroom assignment or management tools, or built-in probability experiments. Choose it when learners need to explore datasets, connect visualizations, and present findings; consider another option if the priority is a guided course or classroom administration features.
