ClamAV is an open-source antivirus toolkit maintained by Cisco, designed especially for email scanning on mail gateways. It suits technical users, developers, administrators, and teams integrating malware detection into software or self-hosted systems. The toolkit supports on-demand scanning on GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, and Windows, along with API use and a shared library for application integration. Linux users also get on-access scanning.

Its strongest area is scanning depth for a free engine. ClamAV provides command-line virus scanning, a multi-threaded scanning daemon, automatic signature database updates, and digital signature verification for virus databases. It can inspect archives and compressed files, scan mail files and email formats, and analyze Portable Executable, ELF, and Mach-O files. Data loss prevention detection is also available for selected identifiers. These capabilities make it a practical fit for mail gateways, web scanning workflows, document inspection, executable analysis, and endpoint-security integrations. Sendmail is the listed integration.

ClamAV is a focused antivirus engine rather than a complete consumer endpoint suite. Its published scope centers on antivirus scanning, and the available capabilities do not establish ransomware protection or the broader controls expected from a full endpoint-security product. Choose it when command-line access, open-source licensing, self-hosting, Linux on-access protection, or integration into an existing system matters most. Consider a different product when you need a packaged endpoint experience with broader protection features and less technical administration.
