Our verdict on Cinelerra-GG Infinity
Cinelerra-GG Infinity is a free, open-source non-linear video editor for Linux distributions. It is aimed at users ranging from hobbyists to broadcast workflows, with tools for multi-track timeline editing, nested clips, grouping, trimming, multicam editing, color grading, compositing, and audio mixing. The desktop application supports 4K export and resolutions up to 8K, making it relevant to editors working with high-resolution media who prefer Linux software without subscriptions or commercial sales.
Its strongest case is the depth of its editing and media support. Multicam editing includes automatic audio synchronization, while color work is supported by an RGB parade, vectorscope, and histogram. The editor supports 100+ container formats and 400+ codecs, plus OpenGL, VAAPI, and VDPAU hardware acceleration. Audio workflows include unlimited audio tracks and LV2/LADSPA plugin support. These capabilities make Cinelerra-GG Infinity a focused option for technically demanding individual workflows and broadcast-oriented projects.
The trade-off is ecosystem reach. Cinelerra-GG Infinity is distributed as a Linux AppImage, with additional community-maintained packages and source code, but it does not provide a web app, mobile app, team collaboration, or integrations. Editors who need shared project workflows, cross-platform access, or browser-based editing should choose another product. Linux users who prioritize extensive timeline, multicam, color, codec, audio, and high-resolution capabilities may find the free open-source model a strong fit.
