Our verdict on ChineseClass101
ChineseClass101 organizes Chinese study into structured pathways from absolute beginner through advanced levels, using short audio and video lessons taught by real teachers. Practical dialogues, lesson notes, read-along transcripts, vocabulary lists, and quizzes support learners who want a guided route through speaking-focused material rather than a standalone reference tool. Lessons are available on iOS and Android, with eligible lessons downloadable for offline listening. It suits independent learners who want regular lesson content and study aids, while learners who need one-on-one instruction should look at Premium PLUS.
The plans add tools in stages. Free provides limited access, including the first three lessons in each pathway and Chinese Word of the Day. Basic is listed at $4 per month with annual billing and adds all lessons and in-depth notes. Premium, at $10 per month with annual billing, adds multiple-choice assessments, line-by-line audio dialogue, and spaced repetition flashcards. Premium PLUS is listed at $23 per month with annual billing; it adds one-on-one teacher access, hand-graded assessments, writing and pronunciation practice, and dialogue role play. A 7-day free trial is available, and the trial does not require a card; a 60-day refund period is also stated.
The standout is the combination of practical dialogue and supporting study materials: transcripts and notes help learners revisit lesson content, while vocabulary tools and flashcards support review. Offline listening is useful for learners who want to study away from a connection, though it applies only to eligible downloads. The main trade-off is that individualized feedback is reserved for the top plan, so learners seeking teacher interaction should compare its cost with their need for feedback. Those looking for a free starting point or affordable structured audio lessons may find the lower tiers a closer fit; learners who prefer a live, conversation-first course may want another format.
