Our verdict on Cheogram

Cheogram is a free, open-source messaging app and service ecosystem built on XMPP, also known as Jabber. Its Android client is aimed at users who want decentralized messaging with OMEMO end-to-end encryption, private groups and channels, multi-device messaging, calls, media and file attachments, and push notifications. An account with a Jabber service is required; users can self-host that service or use another operator.

Cheogram’s main distinction is its network reach. Interoperability through telephone, email, and SIP gateways extends conversations beyond XMPP, with integrations including JMP.chat, Vonage, Twilio, Email, and SIP. Chats can also include WebXDC interactive widgets. This makes Cheogram a fit for people who want XMPP messaging without being limited to contacts on the same network. Gateway availability and pricing depend on the connected service, and some gateway services may have separate costs.

The product’s feature set is broad for an Android messaging client: automatic local message deletion, encrypted backups, disappearing messages, audio and video calls, and support for text, image, video, audio, and file attachments are included in the published capabilities. Its focus is narrower than a cross-platform messenger because Android is the confirmed client platform, while the first-party web client is unfinished. Choose Cheogram if Android support, open-source software, XMPP interoperability, and gateway access are priorities. Choose another messenger if you need a finished web client or broader platform coverage.
