Our verdict on Ceremonies
Ceremonies is an open-source web application for agile estimation and retrospective sessions. It suits teams that want a defined retrospective process without requiring every participant to create an account: facilitators create rooms, and participants join with a room code. Its workflow covers anonymous writing, grouping, voting, discussion, action items, and follow-up from earlier sessions. The product also supports planning-poker estimation with hidden votes and simultaneous reveal.
The pricing structure is straightforward. The Free plan supports 1 team, 5 members, and 10 sessions per month. The Pro plan removes the Free plan limits. Ceremonies is available as a hosted web service or for self-hosting, and the software is designed for self-hosting under the MIT license. For delivery workflows, Jira export connects estimation results with Jira, while Slack supports copying estimation session summaries. Team dashboards and member management add administrative visibility for ongoing use.
Its strongest distinction is the continuity between ceremonies: inline action items carry forward to the next retrospective instead of ending with a single session. Anonymous writing does not show typing indicators or avatars, and anonymous voting gives each participant three votes. These details support a structured, lower-pressure discussion format, while the Happy, Sad, and Confused cards provide a clear starting point. Ceremonies is a good fit for open-source teams that need retrospectives and estimation in one focused tool. Teams needing broader integrations, AI features, or more capacity within the Free plan should consider alternatives.
