Our verdict on Cathar
Cathar is an open-source command-line and Rust-library toolkit for restoring audio files and video tracks. It suits users who need a free standalone workflow for cleaning, repairing, leveling, or processing multiple files, as well as developers embedding restoration pipelines in Rust applications. It accepts WAV, MP3, FLAC, OGG, M4A, MP4, and MKV inputs, and writes WAV, FLAC, or AIFF output. The published feature set covers denoising, hum and wind removal, click and crackle suppression, declipping, dereverberation, spectral repair, de-plosive processing, rustle reduction, and loudness normalization.
Its main strength is breadth within a focused restoration workflow. Broadband denoising can use spectral subtraction or Wiener filtering, while optional GRU-based machine-learning denoising adds another approach. Hum removal supports fixed-frequency and adaptive harmonic cancellation; declipping includes A-SPADE and alternative reconstruction methods; and spectral repair addresses transient artifacts, whistles, bursts, and glitches. Voice isolation, LUFS-aware loudness and peak normalization, and batch directory processing extend Cathar beyond a single cleanup operation. The self-contained Rust binary also avoids an ffmpeg dependency.
Cathar is particularly well suited to technically comfortable users who value open-source software, repeatable file processing, and the ability to embed restoration logic through a Rust library API. Its standalone workflow and command-line orientation make it less suitable for buyers seeking a graphical editing environment or a broader production suite. The format flow is also specific: Cathar accepts several audio and video inputs but produces WAV, FLAC, or AIFF files. Choose it when restoration range, batch handling, and developer access matter more than an interface-led workflow.
