Our verdict on Castle Game Engine

Castle Game Engine is a free, open-source 2D and 3D game engine built around Object Pascal. It is aimed at developers creating games for Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, Raspberry Pi, Android, iOS, Web, Nintendo Switch, and Pine64. Its visual editor covers game worlds and user interfaces, while scene, camera, navigation, lighting, viewport, physics, audio, networking, and rendering systems support projects that need more than basic 2D scenes. Commercial and proprietary applications are supported under its licensing terms.

The engine’s main strength is the range of development tools included in one Pascal-focused environment. It supports glTF, X3D, Spine, and sprite sheets, along with shader effects, physically based rendering, shadows, post-processing, automatic interface scaling, rigid bodies, colliders, joints, and collision queries. Integrations include Blender, Sketchfab, Tiled, Visual Studio Code, Lazarus, Delphi, OpenAL, FMOD, and several networking libraries. Command-line build and packaging tools, Docker tooling, and integrations with GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, and Woodpecker CI also suit teams that want repeatable builds.

Networking is supported through HTTP requests, client-server messaging, and third-party integrations, but the engine does not provide dedicated high-level multiplayer components. That makes it better suited to developers comfortable assembling networking systems from lower-level building blocks than to teams seeking a ready-made multiplayer framework. The free, open-source model and Pascal workflow are strong reasons to choose it for open-source projects, desktop and mobile releases, or developers already working with Delphi or Lazarus. Teams wanting high-level multiplayer features or a different scripting language should consider alternatives.
