Cascades review
A free Overworld datapack for players who want varied terrain without leaving vanilla behind.

Cascades is a free Minecraft Java Edition datapack that reworks vanilla Overworld terrain generation. It is aimed at players who want more varied landscapes while keeping a survival-friendly, vanilla-style feel. Its terrain can include cliffs, overhangs, floating islands, larger continents, oceans and lakes, along with underground rivers intended for boat travel. The datapack also smooths land-to-water transitions and introduces several biomes while adjusting some vanilla biomes. It supports singleplayer and server-side play, and is available for multiple Minecraft versions.
The main draw is the mix of large-scale terrain changes and navigable features rather than a shift toward a substantially different world style. Cascades keeps its coverage to the Overworld and does not generate other dimensions. It also does not add structures, and its stated aim is not to introduce substantially different biomes. That makes it a fit for players who want exploration shaped by terrain and waterways, but a less suitable choice for anyone seeking new structures, dimension generation or a more extensive departure from vanilla world design.
Cascades is installed during world creation, and its installation guidance says it cannot safely be removed from an existing world. Players should therefore decide on the datapack before starting a world where they want it to generate terrain. The project supports Data Pack, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with releases spanning versions from 1.18.2 through 26.3. Choose it for broad loader coverage and dramatic Overworld terrain; choose another option if you need dimension generation or want to add it safely to a world already in progress.
Cascades pros and cons

- Supports Data Pack, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt
- Where it doesn't
- Only changes Overworld generation; it does not add dimension generation
- Must be installed when creating a world and cannot safely be removed later
- Its focus is terrain, not added structures or substantially different biomes
