CarbonInk review
A free, offline Scope 1–3 accounting tool for technical teams that value control.

CarbonInk is a free, open-source desktop application for greenhouse-gas accounting. It is aimed at technical users who want to manage Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions locally, without an account, cloud service, or subscription. The application imports utility bills, fuel receipts, freight, travel, and purchase documents, then uses AI to extract activity data. It also tracks emission sources, activity data, and factors across an inventory.
Its strongest area is the combination of accounting control and reporting depth. Users can pin emission factors and preserve calculation snapshots, creating a clearer record of how inventory figures were produced. CarbonInk also supports supplier Scope 3 Category 1 data collection, disclosure questionnaire completion, and PDF generation for an ISO 14064-1 inventory report. The built-in MCP server connects inventory data with Claude, Cursor, and Pi, which fits teams already working with those tools.
CarbonInk’s local and offline design is a clear fit for organizations that prefer desktop software and direct control over accounting data. It is less suitable for teams that depend on broad third-party integrations, browser-based collaboration, or a shared cloud workspace. The product runs on Windows and macOS, so platform requirements also matter. Choose CarbonInk when free open-source software, offline operation, automated document extraction, and detailed Scope 1–3 workflows are priorities; choose an alternative when a wider ecosystem or cloud-first teamwork is more important.
