Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026

Captain Live Chat adds a floating chat widget and an agent inbox to a WordPress site. Visitors can start conversations, use quick replies, or leave a message through an offline lead-capture form. Agents see visitor information, manage conversations, set online status, and review history and analytics. Its free, self-hosted approach suits small teams that want website support while keeping chat data in the site's WordPress database; agencies and mid-market teams are also listed as fits.

The plugin focuses on website chat rather than a broad multichannel support setup. Its widget includes a pre-chat form and appearance controls, while routing, visitor tracking, and conversation history support the agent workflow. Agents can use role- and user-based permissions, canned replies, and automatic away behavior. Notifications can arrive through sound, browser push, in-app alerts, and email. Updates use AJAX polling. This combination offers useful context and controls for a WordPress support team, but the channel scope is narrow and no chatbot is included.

Captain Live Chat is free, with an optional Pro add-on for additional capabilities; according to the vendor's published description, no Pro price is stated. The plugin does not include its own AI, though AI assistants can optionally act on chats through WordPress Abilities and a separate MCP bridge plugin. Community is the stated support channel. Choose it if self-hosting, a no-cost starting point, and WordPress-centered chat matter more than channel breadth or built-in AI. Teams needing chat across multiple channels or an all-in-one AI assistant should consider alternatives.
