Our verdict on ByteStash

ByteStash is an open-source, self-hosted application for storing, organizing, editing, and filtering code snippets. It is aimed at developers who want to operate their own snippet-management service rather than rely on a hosted workspace. The web application supports filtering by programming language and content, while SQLite provides the snippet storage layer. ByteStash also offers configurable user accounts, token expiry, and optional OIDC single sign-on for controlled access.

Its strongest distinction is the combination of developer-facing APIs and AI connectivity. A REST API with Swagger documentation provides a documented integration surface, while the Model Context Protocol endpoint is designed for AI-assisted snippet management. The listed ecosystem includes Claude, OpenAI/ChatGPT, and Perplexity. That makes ByteStash a practical fit for workflows where code snippets need to remain available to web tools, API clients, and AI assistants under the same self-hosted service.

Deployment is centered on Docker, with the application using React, Tailwind CSS, Node.js, Express, and SQLite. This gives technical teams a defined deployment path, but it also places responsibility for hosting, configuration, access control, and ongoing operation with the user. Optional OIDC can connect sign-on to an existing identity setup, while token expiry adds a configurable security control. Choose ByteStash if self-hosting, open-source access, REST integration, and MCP support matter most. A different category fit may be preferable for teams seeking a fully managed snippet service or a broader collaborative workspace.
