BungeeCord review
A free, open-source choice for routing players across connected Minecraft servers.

BungeeCord is an open-source, self-hosted Minecraft proxy and API maintained by SpigotMC. It is designed for Minecraft server owners and administrators running connected networks, from small setups to larger environments. The proxy places multiple backend servers behind one network connection, allowing players to move between game modes or servers through commands and plugin-operated portals. It supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and self-hosted deployment.
There is no paid tier to compare: BungeeCord is distributed as open-source code with precompiled binaries. Its feature set covers the core requirements of a multi-server network, including server-priority routing, fallback routing, forced-host redirection, player transfers, multiple listener configuration, IP and UUID forwarding, and proxy-side administration commands. Permission groups and command controls provide additional administrative structure, while the plugin API supports extensions and portal-style server switching.
Its ecosystem fit centers on Spigot, Bukkit, and VanillaCord, with published protocol mappings covering Minecraft 1.8, 1.9, 1.13 through 1.21.9, and 26.1. The current protocol source may reflect the development branch, so administrators should review compatibility before deployment. BungeeCord is a strong fit for established networks that need routing, transfers, and proxy-level controls without a commercial license. A single-server operator or anyone seeking a managed hosting service should consider a different approach.
