bsnes-plus review
A Windows-only emulator built for homebrew development, ROM hacking, and SNES debugging.

bsnes-plus is a standalone Super Nintendo and Super Famicom emulator aimed primarily at homebrew developers and ROM hackers. Its focus is development and analysis rather than online play: the Windows 64-bit application combines emulation with CPU and coprocessor debugging, disassembly, breakpoints, memory inspection, register editing, and trace logging. It also supports save states, cartridge states, IPS and BPS soft patching, Game Genie and Pro Action Replay cheat-code files, and SPC music tools.
The standout capability is its debugging depth. Developers can inspect memory with code and data highlighting, edit registers, analyze addresses, and review execution through breakpoint and trace tools. Graphics work is supported through tile, tilemap, sprite, palette, and VRAM viewers, while the SPC output visualizer and SPC dumping tools add visibility into the console’s audio side. Satellaview and BS-X support extend the scope beyond standard cartridge emulation. This makes bsnes-plus a practical fit for examining game behavior, creating homebrew, and working through ROM-hacking tasks that require more than basic playback.
The tradeoff is a narrow platform and product focus. The published release information centers on Windows 64-bit, with macOS described as forthcoming and Linux support less formally supported. Internet multiplayer is not supported or planned, so it is not suited to users seeking network play. The project is open source, and the listed bsnes-plus v05 release dates from 2019. Choose it for Windows-based SNES development, reverse engineering, graphics inspection, or patch and cheat workflows; choose another emulator if broad desktop coverage, current release activity, or online multiplayer is a priority.
