Our verdict on BookPlayer

BookPlayer is a free, open-source audiobook player for people who already have DRM-free M4B, M4A, MP3, FLAC or other supported audio files. It supports imports from device storage, AirDrop, iTunes File Sharing and ZIP archives, making it suited to solo listeners and small setups built around personal libraries. The app also works with Audiobookshelf and Jellyfin servers, so it fits users who store audiobooks locally or on their own server rather than relying on an included catalog.

The published free downloads include in-app purchases, and the product follows a freemium model. BookPlayer Pro adds cloud synchronization across devices, while the core listening experience includes progress tracking, finished-book markers, chapter navigation, bookmarks with notes, variable playback speed, smart rewind, volume boost and adjustable sleep timers. Apple Watch and Wear OS playback support extends listening beyond the primary device. Deployment covers mobile, desktop and cloud-connected use across iOS, Android and macOS.

BookPlayer’s main strength is its focused handling of personal files and server-hosted audiobooks. Its folder and playlist organization, offline listening, and connections to Audiobookshelf and Jellyfin make it a practical choice for listeners managing their own collection. It is less suitable for anyone seeking a built-in audiobook catalog or a broader platform footprint. Choose BookPlayer if local imports, server integration and wearable playback matter most; choose another audiobook app if discovery and access to a supplied catalog are the priority.
