Our verdict on BonPatron
BonPatron is a web-based French spelling and grammar checker designed primarily for learners of French as a second language and Francophones in minority-language settings. Users submit text, review highlighted errors, read corrective explanations, and make their own changes. The free version provides online checking, while BonPatron Pro extends the tool with longer submissions, error summaries, interactive grammar exercises, text archiving, a conjugator, and an English-French dictionary.
Its strongest distinction is the combination of correction and learning support. BonPatron identifies spelling errors and common grammatical problems, then explains the highlighted issues instead of presenting corrections without context. Categorized error summaries can help learners see recurring problem areas, while interactive exercises, the verb conjugator, and the English-French dictionary broaden its value beyond a single proofreading pass. Pro also adds a resizable, fullscreen editor and text archiving, which suit users who want a more developed writing workspace.
BonPatron is a focused choice rather than a broad writing platform. It checks French only, runs through the web, and has no standalone desktop version or listed integrations. That makes it a good fit for learners who want accessible French correction with explanations and practice features, especially if a free online tool meets their needs. Users looking for support across multiple languages, desktop software, or connected workflows should choose an alternative built around those requirements. The paid Pro plan is the relevant upgrade for users who want archiving, editor improvements, summaries, and additional learning tools.
