Azure Sphere OS review
A managed OS and security service for Azure Sphere-certified devices, packaged with silicon.

Azure Sphere OS is Microsoft’s custom Linux-based operating system for Azure Sphere-certified microcontrollers. It runs high-level applications alongside real-time capable applications, with security-monitor isolation, signed software, certificate-based authentication, and a managed update pipeline. It is aimed at teams building connected devices that need device security and fleet management, particularly those already working with Azure IoT services.
The main strength is its managed device lifecycle. The OS and applications can receive automatic over-the-air updates, while rollback images help recover from interrupted or failed updates. Remote attestation and certificate authentication, backed by a hardware root of trust using the Pluton security subsystem, support device identity and software integrity. Bulk claiming, device groups, and cloud deployments provide tools for provisioning and managing devices at fleet scale. These capabilities make it a fit for products where security and ongoing updates matter more than support for a broad range of hardware.
Azure Sphere OS is not sold on its own: the MT3620AN solution bundles a certified MCU, OS license, and access to the Azure Sphere Security Service, with ongoing OS updates. The platform integrates with Azure IoT Hub, Azure IoT Central, and Azure IoT Hub Device Provisioning Service, and can connect to public or private cloud services. That combination suits teams building around Azure Sphere-certified hardware, but buyers seeking an OS they can deploy across varied existing devices should look elsewhere. The published support channel is documentation, so teams that require other support routes should factor that into their evaluation.
