AWS Auto Scaling review
A free AWS service for coordinating scaling across supported resource types.

AWS Auto Scaling coordinates scaling plans for applications using supported AWS resources. It is suited to teams with variable workloads across services such as EC2 Auto Scaling groups, EC2 Spot Fleets, ECS services, DynamoDB capacity, and Aurora replicas. Users can identify resources through CloudFormation stacks or tags, then choose recommendations focused on availability, cost, or a balance of both. Its single-cloud scope makes it a fit for AWS environments rather than applications spanning cloud providers.
The service adjusts capacity with target-tracking policies based on resource utilization, and predictive scaling forecasts demand to schedule EC2 capacity changes. That distinction matters: teams can use utilization-based adjustment across supported resource types, while demand forecasting is specifically for EC2. Recommendations can help frame scaling around operational priorities, but they do not remove the need to consider the charges associated with the resources being scaled.
AWS Auto Scaling itself is free to use, with no paid tiers described. CloudWatch monitoring and the underlying AWS resources can still incur charges, so “free” applies to the service rather than the complete operating cost. Access is available through the AWS Management Console, CLI, or SDK, and the listed support channel is documentation. Choose it when workloads rely on several supported AWS resource types and centralized scaling plans are useful. Look elsewhere if you need multi-cloud scaling or predictive scaling for resources beyond EC2.
AWS Auto Scaling pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Coordinates scaling plans for EC2, ECS, DynamoDB, and Aurora resources
- Combines utilization-based target tracking with predictive EC2 scaling
- Offers recommendations that prioritize availability, cost, or a balance
- Where it doesn't
- Scales AWS resources only; it does not cover other cloud providers
- Predictive scaling applies to EC2 resources
- CloudWatch monitoring and underlying AWS resource charges still apply
