Autodesk Moldflow review
A focused simulation suite for assessing plastic molding processes and part quality.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Autodesk Moldflow simulates plastic injection and compression molding for engineers, analysts, and mold designers assessing manufacturability and molded-part quality. Its analysis covers material flow, mold cooling, warpage, and process settings, with tools to identify potential sink marks and weld lines. Moldflow Adviser provides manufacturability guidance, while Moldflow Insight supports more detailed analyses and process controls. It is suited to plastic-parts teams whose work centers on molding processes, rather than teams looking for a broad CAE environment.
The workflow combines native CAD import and automated meshing with analysis of filling, packing, cooling, deflection, and other molding-related factors. Reports can be generated with the Report Wizard. For optimization work, Insight includes automated design of experiments and parametric analysis for process and design variables, plus API tools for custom scripts. Solving can run locally, on a remote server, or in the cloud through Insight. Autodesk Drive, Autodesk Shared Views, and Autodesk Fusion 360 are listed integrations; Adviser is a Windows application, while Insight and Synergy support Windows and Linux.
Autodesk offers a 30-day trial, but not a free plan, and subscription costs require contacting sales. That makes evaluation possible before a purchase conversation, though buyers cannot compare subscription costs from a published plan breakdown here. Moldflow fits teams that need dedicated injection or compression molding analysis and can work within Autodesk's subscription process. Teams seeking CAE beyond the product's molding emphasis should compare it with software built for a broader range of engineering simulations. Its scope is specialized, but that focus is relevant when mold filling, cooling, warpage, and process optimization are the central questions.
Autodesk Moldflow pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Simulates injection and compression molding, including filling, packing, and cooling
- Automated meshing and native CAD import support simulation workflows
- Insight offers local, remote, and cloud solving plus optimization tools
- Where it doesn't
- Its focus is molding rather than broad, general-purpose CAE
- Subscriptions require contacting Autodesk sales
- There is no free plan; access is through a 30-day trial or paid subscription
