Authy review
A focused free authenticator for mobile users who need synced TOTP tokens.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Authy is a free two-factor authentication app for individuals who need time-based one-time passcodes across supported mobile devices. It adds accounts by scanning QR codes and generates TOTP codes offline, making it suitable for services that support authenticator apps, including Facebook, Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Dropbox. The product is focused on iOS and Android, with encrypted backups, device synchronization and several app-protection options.
Its strongest fit is multi-device continuity. Encrypted cloud backup and restore can preserve tokens across supported mobile devices, while device management allows users to rename or remove devices. Authy also supports PIN, password and biometric app protection. Adding a device can require SMS, voice or approval from an existing device, giving the account a defined device-enrollment process. These features make Authy a practical choice for individuals who want more than a single-device authenticator, while offline token generation keeps code creation available without an internet connection.
The Free plan includes two-factor authentication, encrypted cloud backups and multi-device support, with no paid tier described. The trade-off is a narrow mobile focus: Twilio’s Linux, macOS and Windows desktop applications reached end of life on March 19, 2024 and are no longer supported. Authy also does not offer push approvals or team administration, so it is less suited to organizations that need centrally managed authentication or users who want a desktop authenticator. Choose it for free, synchronized mobile TOTP; choose another option if desktop support, push-based sign-in approval or team controls are essential.
