AustLII review
A broad, free legal research library for Australia and New Zealand.

AustLII is a free, web-based legal research service for lawyers, legal researchers, students, academics, and the public. Its searchable collections cover Australian jurisdictions and New Zealand, bringing together court and tribunal decisions, consolidated and historical legislation, acts, regulations, legal journals, scholarship, law reform materials, and Australian and international treaties. The service is operated by the UTS and UNSW law faculties and is available through the web.
Its strongest feature is breadth within Australasian legal information. Users can search across cases, legislation, commentary, treaties, and law reform resources, then follow hypertext links between cases, legislation, and cited materials. LawCite adds citation analysis and related-case links, while result sorting by relevance, date, database, and citation frequency helps organize larger research sets. This makes AustLII a practical starting point for authorities-focused research, especially when the work spans multiple source types rather than case law alone.
AustLII's free model suits individuals and organizations that need broad research access without a paid plan. Its jurisdictional focus is also a strength for Australian and New Zealand work, but it is less suitable for teams that need a wider jurisdictional scope or docket-search workflows. The service is web-only, so it does not offer a native desktop or mobile platform in the published product details. Choose AustLII for free access to a wide Australasian legal library and linked citation research; choose an alternative when docket search or a broader geographic focus is central to the workflow.
