Attract-Mode review
A flexible, arcade-focused frontend for organizing and launching emulator libraries.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Attract-Mode is an open-source graphical frontend for command-line emulators including MAME, MESS and Nestopia. It is designed for arcade cabinets and emulator collections, organizing games and ROMs into configurable displays. Windows, macOS and Linux support, including Raspberry Pi and Odroid systems, makes it suitable for varied arcade and home setups. Its controls cover joysticks, gamepads, spin dials, keyboards and mice, while Steam support extends the library beyond emulators.
Library management is the product’s central strength. Attract-Mode can generate game and ROM lists from configured emulator directories, then filter and sort them by game attributes. Its built-in information editor supports metadata changes, while artwork and game-information scraping can enrich displays. Per-game emulator launch-command customization adds control for collections with different configurations. Integrations include MAME, MESS, Nestopia, Steam, Hyperspin, MaLa and MameWah, giving it a clear fit within arcade-emulation ecosystems.
Customization is deeper than a basic launcher: layouts and themes are configurable and scriptable, and usage statistics record play count and total time. The open-source model keeps the product free and avoids paid-tier decisions, but its focus is narrow. Buyers building an arcade-oriented emulator library should find the combination of controls, metadata editing and display customization compelling. It is less suitable for users seeking broad multi-store library management, AI-assisted organization or a general-purpose commercial game launcher.
