Our verdict on AT Protocol
AT Protocol is an open, decentralized protocol for building interoperable social applications. It is designed for developers creating clients, custom feeds, bots, search tools, moderation services, and other applications around shared social data. The protocol covers portable identities, signed repositories, shared schemas, authenticated APIs, and event streams for records such as posts, comments, likes, follows, and profiles. Applications can participate through Bluesky-operated infrastructure or self-hosted components.
For teams working with decentralized social data, the protocol offers a broad set of building blocks. Portable identities use DIDs and domain-based handles, while signed repositories support verifiable social records. Shared Lexicon schemas help applications work with interoperable records and APIs. Developers can consume public WebSocket firehoses and Jetstream event streams, filter events by collections, accounts, and event types, replay historical events, create snapshots, and forward Jetstream events through webhooks. SDKs and examples are available for TypeScript, Python, Go, and cURL.
AT Protocol is free and open source, with API and self-hosted deployment options. Its infrastructure can include a self-hosted personal data server, relay, and application services, giving teams a path to operate components of the network themselves.
