Aspen Tempest review
A self-hosted reservoir suite for advanced simulation, matching, uncertainty, and optimization.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Aspen Tempest is an integrated reservoir engineering and simulation suite for E&P reservoir engineers working on field appraisal, development planning, optimization, and enhanced oil recovery. Its VIEW module supports simulation input preparation and results visualization, ENABLE handles assisted history matching and optimization, and MORE supports reservoir simulation. Teams can create, edit, submit, and monitor runs, inspect plots and 3D data, generate graphics reports, and calculate run summaries and properties.
The technical scope is suited to complex reservoir studies. Aspen Tempest simulates black-oil and compositional reservoirs, including EOR and hydraulic fracturing scenarios, and supports ensemble-based uncertainty analysis and production-uncertainty prediction. It can connect with ECLIPSE, INTERSECT, Nexus, IMEX, GEM, STARS, OPM, ECHELON, and tNavigator, along with geological models, production networks, and geomechanical tools. Windows, Linux, and API coverage support varied engineering environments and simulator pipelines.
Published plans use a contact-sales route, so organizations should expect a procurement discussion rather than a self-serve subscription flow. Deployment is self-hosted, with email listed as the support channel; teams should account for infrastructure, access management, and operational ownership during rollout. The product is a strong fit for mid-market and enterprise reservoir groups that need simulation depth, history matching, uncertainty workflows, and optimization in one environment. Organizations seeking well management, production management, hydrocarbon accounting, land-lease management, or regulatory reporting should look for a platform centered on those functions instead.
Aspen Tempest pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Supports black-oil, compositional, EOR, and fracturing scenarios
- Assisted history matching and ensemble-based uncertainty analysis
- Connects with major commercial and proprietary simulators
- Where it doesn't
- Focused on reservoir workflows rather than production or land management
- Self-hosted deployment requires environment and administration planning
- Pricing is handled through a contact-sales process
