Amazon GameLift Servers review
A deep AWS option for dedicated hosting, matchmaking, placement, and live operations.

Amazon GameLift Servers is an AWS service for deploying, operating, scaling, and monitoring dedicated game servers for session-based multiplayer games. It is suited to teams that need managed EC2 fleets, managed container fleets, or hosting resources supplied and managed through GameLift Servers Anywhere. The service also supports game-session placement, player sessions, FlexMatch matchmaking, automatic backfill, and integrations with Unity, Unreal Engine, C++, C#, and Go server SDKs.
Pricing is usage-based rather than organized around fixed plan prices. The Managed hosting option uses managed EC2 and managed container fleets, with compute billed by instance usage and possible data transfer charges. The Anywhere hosting option uses hosting resources that the customer supplies and manages, with charges based on game sessions and connection minutes. New AWS customers may receive Free Tier usage for up to 12 months, while the service remains a paid product without a permanent free plan. Teams should evaluate expected session volume, connection time, compute usage, and AWS data transfer alongside their game architecture.
Its strongest fit is dedicated session hosting with operational control across placement, scaling, monitoring, and deployment. Game-session placement queues can operate across geographic locations, while autoscaling responds to player demand and fleet utilization. Fleet, game-session, and player-session monitoring connect with Amazon CloudWatch, and versioned builds, fleet replacement, container updates, and CI/CD deployment can connect with AWS CodePipeline, AWS CodeDeploy, and AWS Systems Manager. AWS SDK, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, Cognito, SNS, and CloudFormation integrations extend the surrounding platform. Choose it when dedicated multiplayer hosting and AWS ecosystem fit are priorities; choose another service when built-in player accounts are central to the requirement.
