Altirra review
A free, deep emulator for Atari software, hardware behavior, development, and debugging.

Altirra is a free, open-source emulator for Atari 8-bit computers and the Atari 5200, designed for Windows. It covers the Atari 400/800, 1200XL, 600/800XL, 130XE, XEGS, and 5200, making it a fit for users who want more than basic game playback. Its scope also includes Atari software development and hardware-level debugging, with built-in replacements for operating-system, BASIC, and handler ROMs. Those reimplemented ROMs mean Atari ROM images are not required for basic operation.
The strongest part of Altirra is its depth. Cycle-exact emulation targets documented hardware behavior, while the application also emulates hardware expansions, cartridges, PBI devices, modems, accelerators, and disk drives. Disk emulation includes accelerated loading, realistic timing, drive sounds, and drive CPU emulation. Support for ATR, ATX, ATZ, DCM, XFD, PRO, ARC, BAS, ROM, BIN, A52, CAS, and SAP files broadens its usefulness across software types. Customizable keyboard and controller mappings, save states, text copy and paste, a disk explorer, audio and video recording, and a cheat trainer round out the everyday feature set.
For technical users, the debugger adds breakpoints, watchpoints, execution history, source-level stepping, and profiling. That makes Altirra a strong choice for preservation, development, investigation, and accurate Atari computer emulation. Its main tradeoff is focus: the supported systems are Atari 8-bit computers and the 5200, and the application is designed for Windows rather than broader platform coverage. Users seeking a general Atari emulator across other systems should choose a different tool. According to the vendor's notes, real kernel ROM images can improve compatibility, although the built-in reimplemented ROMs support basic operation without them.
Altirra pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Cycle-exact emulation covers documented Atari hardware features.
- Broad image, cartridge, expansion, disk, and controller support.
- Debugger, save states, recording, and profiling support deeper work.
- Where it doesn't
- Available for Windows only.
- Focused on Atari 8-bit computers and the 5200.
- Real kernel ROM images may improve compatibility in some cases.
