Our verdict on Akkoma
Akkoma is open-source social networking software for people who want an account on a federated network. Users can join an existing Akkoma instance or deploy their own server, then communicate with people on other ActivityPub services, including Mastodon. It fits solo users and small groups interested in decentralized posting, but it is not a conventional hosted social app: deployment is self-hosted, and the listed platform is web only.
Its feature set covers more than basic short posts. Akkoma supports photo and video attachments, following users across the fediverse, and organizing follows into lists. Posts can include emoji reactions and Misskey-flavoured Markdown, and users can edit or quote posts and create polls. These capabilities make it a fit for people who want several familiar social-posting formats within a federated network. Those looking for a simple hosted service or a mobile app should consider alternatives.
Akkoma's ecosystem fit centers on ActivityPub federation, with an optional Mastodon-style frontend alongside the default akkoma-fe interface. That gives administrators a choice of interface while keeping communication with other ActivityPub services central to the product. The software itself is free and open source; hosting costs depend on the instance or deployment, rather than an Akkoma software plan. Community and documentation are the stated support channels. Choose Akkoma if self-hosting, federation, and post editing or polls matter; look elsewhere if you need a managed deployment or mobile app.
