Our verdict on 99Sounds
99Sounds is an independent sound design label and free sound-effects repository for music producers, video creators, game developers, podcasters, and other creative users. Launched in 2014, it offers royalty-free sample libraries for personal and commercial projects across web, Windows, and macOS. The catalog covers drum samples, one-shot percussion, electronic and hip-hop loops, construction kits, MIDI loops, field recordings, nature sounds, cinematic effects, textures, presets, and instrument mappings.
The free-only pricing model keeps access straightforward: the published offering centers on free sample-library downloads rather than multiple subscription or purchase tiers. Its breadth is a defining strength, with audio archives and plugin packages spanning WAV, MIDI, NKI, SFZ, and Serum presets. The catalog also includes free VST, VST3, and AU plugins, giving users options for both sample content and software instruments or effects. Licensing permits personal and commercial use, which suits projects intended for release or distribution.
Format support is the key ecosystem consideration. Native Instruments Kontakt patches, SFZ mappings, Xfer Serum support, and VST, VST3, and AU plugins connect the library to several production workflows, while web access provides the download point. 99Sounds is a strong choice for creators who want a varied, no-cost source of royalty-free sounds, especially when they need drums, loops, MIDI, cinematic material, or field recordings in established formats. It is less suited to buyers seeking a paid plan structure, a unified production workspace, or a narrowly specialized catalog focused on one sound category.
