Our verdict on 8bit.page

8bit.page is a browser-based pixel art workspace for pixel artists, game developers, animators, and other creators. It combines pixel drawing, color, shape, selection, symmetry, tile-drawing, layers, palettes, animation, importing, exporting, and artwork publishing in one web application. The editor can be used without an account or installation, while Projects autosave locally in the browser. That makes it a practical fit for solo creators and small teams that want an accessible pixel-art workflow without desktop deployment.

Animation is a standout strength. The frame-based timeline supports per-frame timing, playback, tags, and onion skinning, while palettes support up to 32 unique colors. The export range is broad: users can produce PNG, JPG, WebP, SVG, GIF, APNG, animated WebP, WebM, and MP4 files, along with PNG sprite sheets with JSON metadata. Imports cover PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG, BMP, AVIF, GIF, and APNG. Optional local Project files use the editable .8bit format, giving creators a way to retain editable work outside the browser.

Publishing is built into the workspace through public or private-link Artwork pages with descriptions and comments. Signed-in users can optionally synchronize selected Projects through 8bit Cloud, with version recovery available for selected Projects. The main boundary is focus: 8bit.page supports tile drawing but does not provide tilemap tools, so game developers needing map construction should choose a dedicated tilemap application instead. It also stays browser-based and has no AI features. Choose 8bit.page for free pixel animation, flexible media export, and lightweight sharing; choose an alternative when tilemaps or a broader production environment are central requirements.
