2FAuth review
A flexible open-source authenticator for self-hosted personal and multi-user deployments.

2FAuth is an open-source, self-hosted web application for storing, organizing, and generating two-factor authentication codes. It is designed for individuals, families, and teams that want authentication data kept under their own infrastructure. Accounts can be arranged into groups, configured by QR code or manually, and imported from supported authenticator formats. Multi-user accounts, registration controls, isolated personal vaults, and account sharing extend it beyond a single-user code generator.
Its strongest advantage is breadth within a self-hosted model. 2FAuth generates TOTP, HOTP, and Steam Guard codes, supports backup and restore through application storage and export capabilities, and offers optional encryption for sensitive database data. Browser access is complemented by extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, including OTP retrieval and QR-code capture. The REST API can manage accounts, groups, settings, and generated OTPs, making the product suitable for workflows that need programmatic control as well as a web interface.
The trade-off is operational ownership: deployment runs on a user-controlled server or through Docker, so teams must handle the surrounding hosting and maintenance responsibilities. The product fits self-hosters, technically capable families, and small teams that value control, sharing, and API access over a managed service. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a fully hosted authenticator with minimal infrastructure work or a native mobile application. For its intended audience, the combination of open-source access, multi-user features, browser support, and REST management gives 2FAuth a focused but capable scope.
