No. External polling alone cannot tell an orchestrator whether a particular application instance should receive traffic, and it cannot explain why a check failed. Production health checks work best as complementary signals: readiness controls traffic, liveness can trigger a restart, startup gives slow initialization time, logs explain failures, and external monitoring tests availability from outside the service.

What each health signal is meant to decide

Signal Question it answers Typical operational consequence
Startup probe Has initialization completed? In Kubernetes, liveness and readiness probes wait until the startup probe succeeds.
Readiness probe Can this instance serve requests now? Kubernetes marks the Pod not ready and removes it from Service load balancing; the process can keep running.
Liveness probe Is the process in a state from which it cannot recover on its own? A failed liveness probe can cause the container to be restarted.
External monitor Can a user or monitoring location reach the service from outside? Can alert on externally visible availability or reachability problems.
Logs and telemetry What happened, and why? Give operators context such as exceptions, dependency timeouts, deployment changes, and request behavior.

These signals are not interchangeable. A healthy process may be temporarily unready because a required dependency is unavailable; restarting it may not help. Conversely, an externally reachable endpoint may respond while a particular replica should not yet receive production traffic.

How to choose what a probe checks

Keep liveness narrow

A liveness check should identify a process-level failure that is unlikely to resolve without a restart, such as a deadlock. Avoid checking downstream services from liveness: a transient database or network problem can then make healthy application processes appear dead and trigger unnecessary restarts. Kubernetes warns, “Incorrect implementation of liveness probes can lead to cascading failures.” (Kubernetes documentation: Configure Liveness, Readiness and Startup Probes.)

Use readiness for traffic eligibility

Readiness can include dependencies when their availability determines whether the instance can serve requests correctly. If a required dependency check fails, the instance can stop receiving new traffic while its process continues running. Make the dependency check bounded with a timeout; an unbounded check can make the health endpoint itself hang. Avoid adding optional dependencies whose brief outage does not prevent useful request handling, since that can remove capacity unnecessarily.

Give initialization its own allowance

For an application that takes a long time to initialize, a Kubernetes startup probe prevents liveness and readiness probes from running until startup succeeds. This avoids treating expected initialization as a liveness failure. Set its allowance to match the application’s actual startup and recovery characteristics.

Handle shutdown in platform context

During shutdown, an application can stop reporting ready before it exits, allowing traffic to drain according to the deployment platform’s behavior. The exact sequencing and drain behavior depend on that platform; do not assume the same shutdown semantics in every hosting environment.

How to tune Kubernetes probe timing

Kubernetes documents defaults of 10 seconds for periodSeconds, 1 second for timeoutSeconds, and 3 consecutive failures for failureThreshold. These are defaults, not recommended values for every workload. The configuration documentation was last modified October 16, 2025. Choose settings based on how quickly the application fails and recovers, the cost of checking it, and how much delay is acceptable before traffic changes or a restart. Confirm that fields and feature behavior match your Kubernetes release. (Kubernetes probe configuration.)

  • periodSeconds sets the interval between probe attempts.
  • timeoutSeconds bounds how long an individual probe can take.
  • failureThreshold controls how many consecutive failures are tolerated before the probe is considered failed.

Probe frequency and timeout also have operational costs: checks consume resources, and dependency checks can add load to the systems they query. Keep responses concise and checks lightweight so health verification does not become a source of load or a recursive failure path.

Keep machine status separate from operator diagnostics

A health endpoint should return a small, consistent result suitable for automation. Put detailed failure context in application logs and telemetry, where an operator can correlate a probe result with exceptions, dependency timeouts, deployments, and request behavior. A status code or short response helps a monitor make a decision; it is not a replacement for diagnostic evidence or audit records.

Probe requests can themselves produce connection-reset or broken-pipe log entries. Identify probe traffic consistently in the application and interpret those entries in context rather than treating every one as an application incident. The appropriate identification or filtering method depends on the application and logging stack. Kubernetes specifically notes this possible logging effect in its probe documentation.

What external polling adds—and what it cannot decide

An external monitor observes the service from outside its process or host environment. It can request a public URL and check a response code, latency, or a small expected response fragment. That vantage point can reveal problems with DNS, TLS, routing, or an edge layer that a local process check may not detect. The Microsoft Health Endpoint Monitoring Pattern describes external monitoring as one part of a health-monitoring approach, alongside internal checks and diagnostic information.

External polling generally cannot determine which replica is ready to receive traffic or why an internal dependency check failed. Use it to alert on user-visible reachability, not to replace per-instance readiness and liveness signals or application logs. A monitor can also pass while a specific instance is unhealthy if requests are routed to another healthy instance.

Kubernetes API server endpoints are a separate case

For Kubernetes API server health, use /livez and /readyz; the older /healthz endpoint is deprecated. A 200 response indicates the status corresponding to the endpoint. The API reference distinguishes readiness—whether the server is accepting traffic—from liveness—whether a restart is appropriate. These API-server paths are not substitutes for application-defined health paths. The Kubernetes API documentation also says verbose output for individual checks is intended for human operators, not as a machine-facing response contract. (Kubernetes API health endpoints.)

A practical production setup

  1. Define the decisions first. Decide what conditions should stop an instance receiving traffic, what conditions justify restarting it, and how long normal initialization takes.
  2. Implement distinct checks. Keep liveness focused on recoverability, readiness focused on serving requests, and startup focused on initialization. Use separate endpoints or clearly differentiated health services where the platform supports them.
  3. Bound dependency checks. Check only dependencies that are essential to serving requests, and set timeouts so a dependency outage cannot leave the health request hanging.
  4. Configure platform behavior. Set probe intervals, timeouts, failure thresholds, and startup allowance to the workload, then verify the behavior against the deployed platform and version.
  5. Make failures diagnosable. Keep endpoint output concise, record useful details in logs and telemetry, and recognize probe-generated connection errors in the logging context.
  6. Add an external synthetic check. Test the public service from an outside vantage point and alert on reachability or user-visible response failures.
  7. Exercise failure cases. Verify that dependency loss changes readiness without causing avoidable restarts, that a genuine unrecoverable process failure invokes the intended liveness action, and that external checks can detect a public-path failure.

In ASP.NET Core, Microsoft documents health-check implementation and configuration in its Health checks in ASP.NET Core guidance. The exact framework implementation differs, but the operational distinction remains: a traffic decision, a restart decision, external observation, and diagnostic context each serve a different purpose.
