Before sharing personal information with an AI companion, check what the service collects, how it uses and shares conversations, how long it keeps them, and what its deletion and age controls actually do. A warm, confidential-sounding tone is not evidence that a conversation is private. Keep passwords, authentication codes, financial details, government identifiers, and highly sensitive information out unless sharing is necessary and you understand the service’s current terms and settings.
Can AI companions see what I tell them?
The service processes what you submit so it can respond, but what happens beyond that depends on the provider and your account settings. A conversation may contain personal information not only in your prompts, but also in uploaded material, generated responses, saved memories, summaries, or inferences the provider creates.
In September 2025, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said it had issued information orders to seven consumer-facing AI chatbot companies. The agency sought information about how companies process inputs, disclose practices, restrict access by age, and use or share personal information from conversations. That was an inquiry into those subjects—not a finding that every company followed every practice under review. Read the FTC announcement.

What should I check before sharing personal information?
Look in the service’s current privacy policy, help pages, and in-product settings. Check the whole data lifecycle rather than relying on a single privacy toggle.
- What is collected? Look for prompts, responses, account details, uploaded files, and any saved memories, summaries, or inferred information the provider says it creates.
- Why is it used? Distinguish operating the service from personalization or memory, safety review, analytics, advertising, and model improvement. One setting may not govern every purpose.
- Who can access or receive it? Check what the policy says about employee access, vendors, and other third parties, including what recipients may do with the information.
- How long is it kept? Look for separate schedules for chat history, temporary chats, safety review, backups, and deletion requests where these are explained.
- What does deletion cover? Find out whether deleting a message, conversation, memory, uploaded file, or account has different effects, and what happens after a deletion request.
- What are the limits of each choice? Check whether settings apply only to new conversations, and whether they change by sign-in status, plan, age, or workspace. Look for any explanation of how sending feedback affects a conversation.
A cautious boundary is to avoid sharing passwords, login codes, financial account details, government identifiers, private information about another person, or highly sensitive health and relationship details unless you have a clear need and understand the provider’s handling of that data.

Does turning off model training delete my chats?
No. A control over whether conversations are used to improve models is not necessarily a control over chat history, retention, or deletion. Read the wording of each control and check the policy for the other parts of the data lifecycle.

ChatGPT as a service-specific example
OpenAI’s documentation, updated in October 2026, says turning off “Improve the model for everyone” means new conversations are not used to improve models; saved chats may still appear in history. OpenAI also says Temporary Chats do not appear in history and are not used for model improvement while temporary, but a copy may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. These details apply to ChatGPT, not to AI companions generally. Available controls can depend on account, plan, and workspace. Check OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ.

Can I delete what I told an AI companion?
That depends on the service and on what you want removed. Deleting a visible conversation may not have the same effect as deleting a saved memory, file, or account. Before sharing, look for the provider’s instructions for each type of data and whether the policy explains retention after a deletion request. If the policy does not make the effect clear, do not assume that removing a chat from view erases every copy or derived record.
What should parents and teens check?
For a child or teen, check the minimum-age rules and parental controls before creating an account or starting a companion conversation. In October 2024, Canadian privacy authorities warned that children and young people may form bonds with AI-integrated toys or online companions and disclose sensitive information or otherwise be manipulated. That warning highlights a potential vulnerability; it is not a finding about every product. Read the Canadian authorities’ statement on AI and children.

In the United States, FTC guidance describes COPPA obligations for covered operators collecting certain personal information from children under 13, including privacy-policy disclosures and parental consent. COPPA does not automatically apply to every service or situation, and U.S. requirements should not be treated as universal rules. See the FTC’s COPPA guidance.
What do regulator findings say—and what do they not say?
Regulatory scrutiny is a reason to read policies carefully, not a substitute for checking the practices of the particular service you use. In May 2026, four Canadian privacy regulators reported concerns from their investigation into ChatGPT’s initial development and deployment. The concerns included overcollection, consent and transparency, inaccuracies, access, correction and deletion, and accountability. This example is specific to that investigation and its scope; it does not establish that every AI companion has the same practices. How can I compare two AI companion services?
There is no basis here for ranking companion brands. Compare the same documented points for each service, using its current policy and settings:
- What information it collects, including memories and inferences.
- Whether it uses information for model improvement, personalization, advertising, or safety.
- What it says about sharing and human or vendor access.
- How long information is retained and what deletion covers.
- Age limits and parental controls.
- How clearly and practically the provider explains these choices.
If a policy does not answer an important question—such as whether deleting a memory also affects a conversation or backup—treat that as unresolved rather than assuming the most privacy-protective outcome.
