No single gadget secures your digital life. Each device reduces one specific risk, and most only work if the account, device, or habit it protects is already set up properly. For most people, the most defensible purchase is a FIDO2/WebAuthn security key, but only for accounts that support one. Privacy screen filters, encrypted removable storage, and optional network hardware cover narrower situations, and each carries compatibility or maintenance requirements that buyers often overlook.
Start with the threat, then pick the device
Most privacy gadget roundups list products first and explain risks second. It works better in the opposite order. Match your main concern to a category, then check whether a free setting or existing feature already covers it before spending money.
- Account takeover through phishing or stolen passwords: a hardware security key or a device-bound passkey, where the service supports it.
- Someone reading your screen in an office, on a train, or in a shared space: a privacy screen filter.
- Losing a laptop, phone, or drive that holds local copies of important files: device encryption plus encrypted removable storage for backups.
- Connected devices in the home sharing data or going unpatched: review the device settings first; a separate router or firewall appliance is an optional add-on.
- Traffic on public networks being intercepted: a VPN, with the limits explained below.
Hardware security keys: the strongest direct fit
A FIDO2/WebAuthn security key is a small physical device that proves you are present when you sign in. Because the login is tied to the site you are actually on, a phishing page cannot easily collect a reusable code. The FBI’s guidance under its Operation Winter SHIELD campaign states: “Deploy phish-resistant methods (FIDO2 compliant security keys or device-bound passkeys) for authentication, remote access, and critical systems.” That is official guidance, and it puts the security key first for high-impact accounts.

Where it helps, and where it does not
A security key only protects accounts whose service accepts it as a second factor or primary login method. Your email, banking, cloud storage, and developer accounts are the places to check first. If a service offers only SMS codes or an authenticator app, the key does nothing for that account. It also does not protect you from malware already running on your computer, or from a service that has been breached on its own side.

What to check before buying
- Protocol support: Privacy Guides describes FIDO2/WebAuthn and U2F capabilities and notes that features vary among models. Confirm the exact protocols your key supports against your accounts.
- Connector type: USB-A, USB-C, and NFC variants exist. A key that does not fit your ports, or does not work with your phone over NFC, is wasted money.
- Certification: the FIDO Alliance provides a certification lookup for products implementing current FIDO specifications. Use it to confirm a model’s listing rather than relying on packaging claims.
- Vendors: Privacy Guides lists Yubico Security Key and YubiKey products and Nitrokey products among options. These are examples of the category, not automatic endorsements. Compare the features above for each model you consider.
- Backup access: register at least two keys on critical accounts, or keep another recovery method stored safely. Losing your only key can lock you out of the account.
Privacy screen filters for shoulder-surfing
A privacy screen filter is a film or panel that narrows the viewing angle of a phone, laptop, tablet, or monitor, so people beside you see a dark or unreadable image. It addresses one problem: visual exposure in public or shared spaces. It does nothing against remote access, malware, or data stored on the device.
- Dimensions: measure the screen diagonal and check the exact model for your device, since a filter sized for a neighboring model may not fit.
- Attachment style: adhesive, magnetic, or clip-on. Adhesive films can leave residue or trap dust, and clip-on types may not suit every laptop hinge.
- Orientation: many filters protect only in landscape or only in portrait. Check this if you rotate your device.
- Brightness trade-off: filters reduce the visible brightness for everyone, including you, so you may need to raise brightness.
Privacy Guides and general gift guides mention these filters as an accessory category. Treat any product examples you see in those guides as illustrations; neither source compares filters through independent testing.

Encrypted removable storage and the backups behind it
Encrypted USB drives and external SSDs can protect local copies of important files if the drive is lost or stolen. The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) recommends device encryption for lost or stolen devices, and Privacy Guides’ guidance on local backups points the same way where you control the decryption keys yourself.

- Turn on device encryption for the computer that holds the originals. On Windows, use BitLocker in editions that include it; on macOS, use FileVault in System Settings under your name or Privacy & Security, depending on version.
- Encrypt the external drive with a passphrase you can recover. Use the built-in tool for your system so the key stays under your control rather than a third-party cloud service.
- Store the recovery key or passphrase somewhere separate from the drive. A lost passphrase on an encrypted drive usually means the data is gone.
- Keep at least one more copy somewhere else, and test a restore at least once. An encrypted drive that cannot be read when needed is not a backup.
Source the drive carefully. The ACSC advises: “Only use external devices and cables, such as a USB drive or memory card, from trusted sources.” A cheap unbranded drive from an unknown seller is a poor place to store sensitive data, and an unfamiliar cable can carry more risk than the drive itself.
Network hardware is optional
A separate router or firewall appliance can add controls such as segmenting guest and smart-home devices or logging traffic. Privacy Guides notes that a separate router may be beneficial, but it is not a requirement for privacy. Most households get more value from the steps below than from new hardware.

- Check data collection and sharing: review what each connected device sends to its manufacturer, and turn off features you do not need. The ACSC lists this as a practical check before buying smart devices.
- Change default passwords on routers and connected devices.
- Confirm update support: find out how long the manufacturer will provide firmware updates before buying, and keep firmware current afterward. Hardware that stops receiving updates becomes a risk over time.
- Be realistic about setup: a firewall appliance with custom rules takes time to configure correctly. Buy one only if you will maintain it.
VPNs: what the tunnel does and does not do
Microsoft describes a VPN as creating an encrypted tunnel that makes traffic harder for others to intercept. That is a narrow claim. It protects data in transit between your device and the VPN server, which matters on untrusted public Wi-Fi. It does not make you anonymous, and it does not stop websites, apps, or logged-in services from tracking your activity. Your VPN provider can also see your traffic metadata, so the provider’s own practices become part of your trust decision.

Before you spend anything
- Check whether your important accounts already offer a stronger login method than the one you use.
- Confirm the model’s compatibility with your specific devices and accounts, not only the product category.
- Plan the recovery path: a second key, a stored recovery code, or a tested backup.
- Look up update and support periods before buying network or connected hardware.
Product models, certifications, prices, and update periods change, so verify them on the manufacturer’s site or the FIDO Alliance lookup at the time you buy.
