You can start a print-on-demand business without buying finished inventory upfront: a fulfillment provider generally makes and ships each product after a customer orders it. But you still need to choose a specific audience, create original designs, price products carefully, attract shoppers, and handle customer issues. The steps below help you test a focused offer while making the costs and tradeoffs visible.
How print-on-demand works
You create or commission artwork, apply it to products offered by a print provider, and list those products on a marketplace or online store. Where integrations are available, you connect the sales channel to the provider. When a customer orders, the provider produces, packs, and ships the item. This can let you test products without first purchasing and storing finished stock, as Shopify’s guide to print on demand explains.
Not holding inventory does not mean running the business costs nothing. Per-item costs can be higher than bulk purchasing, shipping is less directly under your control, and customization may be limited by the provider’s catalog and processes. You remain responsible for the offer, the listing, customer expectations, and the way you respond when an order goes wrong.
How to start, step by step

Choose a specific audience and need
Start with a group of people and a reason they might want a particular kind of product. A defined audience helps you decide what to design, what to sell, and where to reach potential customers. Treat a niche as a way to focus your decisions, not as proof that demand or profit is guaranteed.

Pick one or two product types
Begin with a small range that suits the intended audience. Common print-on-demand categories include T-shirts, mugs, posters, books, accessories, and home décor. A provider’s wide catalog only shows what can be produced; it does not establish that shoppers want a particular item.

Create original artwork
Make or commission a design that reproduces clearly on the product you selected. Check the actual print area and product presentation before building a listing. Do not use protected characters, logos, artwork, or slogans unless you have permission to do so.

Compare fulfillment providers
Compare the exact product and destination you plan to sell to. Look at product availability, production location, production and shipping charges, delivery estimates, print method, sales-channel integrations, branding options, and the process for resolving defects or lost shipments. Shopify’s guide names Printful, Printify, and Gelato as examples and recommends considering product selection, shipping speed, and pricing; those examples are not an independent quality ranking.

Do not assume one provider is best for every item or destination. A useful comparison is based on the item you intend to sell and the service your customers will actually receive.

Choose a sales channel
A marketplace and a standalone store solve different problems. Marketplaces can put listings in front of existing shoppers, but you face competition and marketplace fees. A standalone store offers more control over the brand and customer experience, but requires setup and ongoing work to bring in traffic. Compare audience access, total costs, setup and upkeep, control, and marketing workload before committing. Printful’s channel overview discusses these tradeoffs; it does not establish a universally suitable platform.

Build accurate listings and connect fulfillment
Describe the product accurately, set a considered price, and use images that make the item clear. Confirm that orders are transmitted correctly to the provider and understand who handles customer communication, returns, replacements, and shipping problems. Do not assume that the fulfillment provider takes responsibility for every customer-service issue.

Calculate what remains from each order
Estimate contribution per order by subtracting the provider’s production and shipping charges, selling-channel and payment costs, advertising, and expected service costs from the sale price. Use live prices for the specific product, destination, and channel you have chosen, then revisit the calculation when those costs change. Shopify notes that print-on-demand unit costs can exceed bulk-purchase costs and that results depend on sale price, provider fees, and order volume.

Promote, observe, and adjust
Choose a traffic plan that fits your channel and audience. Shopify suggests using social-media polls and question stickers to gather feedback. Those can help you learn what people respond to, but they are not evidence of guaranteed sales. Use actual customer interest and order economics to decide whether to revise a design, product, price, or marketing approach.

There is no single choice established as best for every new seller. Choose according to the audience you can reach, the level of control you need, and the time and money you can put into setup and promotion.

What a beginner budget should include
Printify’s 2026 guide estimates that many beginners using a standalone store spend around $30–$100 a month. This is a vendor-published, setup-dependent estimate, not a complete startup budget or a universal price. It may not capture every seller’s advertising, design, legal, tax, product-sampling, and transaction expenses. Check current storefront and product prices for your own setup. Printify’s 2026 guide provides the estimate.
“Free” can describe one part of the process, not necessarily the whole business. A provider may charge for production after an order comes in, while the storefront, marketing, and other operating costs still apply. Check current prices for the channel and provider you choose rather than treating an order-based fulfillment arrangement as a zero-cost launch.
Industry size is not a sales forecast
Shopify’s June 26, 2026 guide reports a global print-on-demand market size of $13.1 billion in 2026 and projects 23.6% annual growth through 2033. The guide does not identify the underlying market-research publisher, and the estimate has not been independently validated here. Even if the estimate is accurate, an industry-wide figure does not predict an individual shop’s orders, revenue, or profit.

Business, tax, and intellectual-property checks
Business registration, income tax, sales tax or VAT, consumer-protection requirements, intellectual-property rules, and product-label requirements depend on where you operate and sell. Check the rules that apply to your business with the relevant authorities or a qualified professional rather than relying on a general provider help page as individualized advice.
For US sales tax, Printify’s help page says that a seller using a standalone store who determines they have nexus in a state must register for a permit there. It also says specified marketplace channels act as facilitators in most states and collect and remit tax.
