Principal Asset Management’s 3Q 2026 Global Market Perspectives, with Seema Shah identified as Chief Global Strategist, treats AI capital spending as a force already shaping the global economy and market pricing. Its central claim is that the AI capex cycle is supporting growth and opening opportunities beyond the largest technology names, but that the benefits are unevenly spread and carry inflation, valuation, rate, concentration and financing risks. Whether those returns ultimately justify the scale of spending is, in the report’s framing, still an open question.

The report’s forecasts and market pricing reflect information through June 30, 2026. Read them as a dated snapshot of that outlook, not as current advice.

What the report argues

The report’s thesis is that AI investment has become a structural growth driver. Its opening line puts the point directly: “The world economy has proved remarkably resilient to geopolitical shocks as the AI capex cycle has evolved into the dominant force driving global growth.” The same report adds that “while the benefits are global, they remain unevenly distributed.” Those two sentences define the framework. The growth impulse is treated as real; the distribution of gains and the price investors pay for it are treated as the variables to watch.

A July 10, 2026 Investor Daily article, which reports Shah’s comments secondhand, quotes her describing the buildout as “one of the largest infrastructure build-outs in modern history” and as supporting manufacturing, energy, industrials and global supply chains. Use Principal’s own report for the thesis wherever possible; the article is useful mainly as a sense of how the message was delivered.

The U.S. picture

For the United States, the report attributes resilience to two pillars: healthy consumer spending and a strong investment cycle. Within the investment side, it singles out AI investment, data-center construction and related infrastructure spending as increasingly important. In its account, these offset cyclical softness and cushion downside risk. The same report says the U.S. remains exposed to the dynamics of the technology and infrastructure cycle, so the support is not free of the cycle’s own risks.

The report’s U.S. growth expectation is around the long-run trend rate of 2.1%. That is a forecast in the 3Q 2026 edition, not a measured outcome.

Policy, inflation and the rate outlook

The most concrete numbers in the outlook concern monetary policy. They are period-specific and should be read with their dates attached.

Figure Value as stated Qualification
Federal Reserve participants projecting at least one rate hike that year Nine of 18 Principal Asset Management, 2026; policy data as of June 30, 2026
Fed tightening priced by markets by early 2027 About 50 basis points Market pricing cited in the 3Q 2026 report, not a realized policy action
U.S. growth expectation Around 2.1%, its long-run trend rate Forecast in the 3Q 2026 report

The report’s policy view was that the Fed would hold rates through year-end, with risks skewed toward tightening. The hawkish tilt matters because the AI buildout is financed and priced in a rate environment; the report’s concern is that inflation pressure and a more restrictive central-bank stance could cap the gains that capex-linked growth would otherwise produce.

Equities: broadening, with valuation limits

On equities, the report says technology continues to lead, but earnings growth is broadening. In its view, opportunities extend beyond hyperscalers and semiconductors. It still expects measured gains, because valuations are elevated and the policy-tightening bias limits how much multiple expansion the market can absorb. The practical reading is that the AI theme can reach companies that supply power, industrial equipment, construction and other inputs, but a higher starting valuation leaves less room for disappointment.

Fixed income: income with less margin for error

In fixed income, the report says income is the most attractive return component in its outlook. It also warns that tight credit spreads leave little margin for error, which makes security selection more important than broad exposure. That warning fits the report’s broader point about financing: spending on AI infrastructure increasingly depends on debt markets, and those markets are already pricing a good deal of optimism.

How to test the cycle

The report does not settle whether AI spending will earn an adequate return. It identifies the variables that would tell you whether the cycle is working, and these are the questions to ask of any sector view built on it.

Axis What to check Where the report or cited context raises it
Breadth of earnings Whether profit growth reaches firms beyond the leading technology names Principal’s 3Q 2026 equity section
Valuation and rates How prices respond if rates stay restrictive or tighten further Principal’s 3Q 2026 policy and equity sections
Financing Balance-sheet demands and the changing mix of debt and equity funding State Street Investment Management, August 26, 2026
Physical constraints Grid access, power-generation equipment, skilled labor and permitting Morgan Stanley transcript, June 3, 2026
Concentration Whether diversification reaches several sources of structural growth, not one theme Principal’s 3Q 2026 report
Returns on investment Evidence of durable productivity and earnings gains relative to the scale of spending Principal’s 3Q 2026 report and its earlier 2026 Perspectives

The report’s own diversification line is that “for investors, diversification is about accessing these multiple sources of structural growth.” Read it as a call to spread exposure across sources of growth, not a recommendation of any particular holding.

Supporting views beyond Principal

Two other sources extend the picture. State Street Investment Management’s August 26, 2026 analysis treats accelerating AI capital spending mainly as a financing and balance-sheet question. A Morgan Stanley transcript from June 3, 2026 discusses credit-market participation and names grid access, power-generation equipment, skilled labor and permitting as potential constraints on the buildout. Neither source is a statement by Shah, and both should be read with their dates.

Principal’s earlier 2026 Perspectives describes AI infrastructure spending as a major growth engine while also warning about a possible bubble, an uncertain productivity payoff, energy constraints, concentrated gains and debt-funded investment. It is an earlier outlook that shows the same tension recurring; it is not an update to the 3Q report.

What is and is not established

  • Established in the report: AI capex is a major driver of growth and a source of market breadth, and it carries inflation, valuation, concentration and financing risks.
  • Established as a dated market view: the Fed participant projections and the roughly 50 basis points of priced tightening, both as of mid-2026.
  • Not established: that AI spending will earn an adequate return, that any named company, bond or fund will outperform, or that the policy and market figures still describe current conditions.

For a current view, check Principal’s latest publications and the market data for the date you are reading.
