Princeton University says attackers compromised a University Advancement database on Nov. 10, 2025, through a phishing attack on an employee. The database included contact, biographical and fundraising information, but Princeton has not said which individual records attackers viewed. Potential inclusion in the database is not confirmation that a person’s record was accessed or misused.
What happened in the Princeton data breach?
Princeton says an outside actor targeted an employee who had ordinary access to a University Advancement database. The attack began with a phone call to the employee’s personal cellphone. The caller posed as an Office of Information Technology (OIT) Service Desk employee, persuaded the employee to enter credentials on a website mimicking Princeton’s sign-in page, then prompted the employee to approve a Duo multifactor authentication request initiated by the attacker. Princeton says the intrusion began around midday on Nov. 10, 2025, and was blocked in less than 24 hours. Princeton’s Nov. 15 notice said the attacker was removed within that period and that the university believed no other Princeton technology system was compromised.
The university said it did not know what information in the database had been viewed or accessed. It also said it had notified law enforcement and consulted outside experts. An employee communication dated Nov. 17 described the phishing and MFA steps and advised employees to report suspected exposure to the Service Desk and send suspicious messages to the Phish Bowl.
Who may have had information in the database?
Princeton’s Dec. 5 FAQ says people in the following groups should assume some level of their information was likely in the database:
#1 Best Overall

- VERSATILE APPLICATION: Ideal for a variety of documents, including contracts, court documents, shipping labels, tax returns and more.

- All alumni, including people who attended Princeton without graduating
- Alumni spouses and partners, and widows and widowers of alumni
- Donors and parents of current or former students
- Current students
- Current and former faculty and staff
There is an important qualification for employees: Princeton’s Nov. 15 notice says the database did not contain staff employee data unless the employee was also a donor. It also says the database did not contain detailed student records covered by federal privacy laws. That is different from saying every current or former employee’s employment records were exposed.
Princeton emailed people for whom it had a valid email address on Nov. 15. The university said it did not have addresses for some potentially affected people and that messages could be rejected or filtered into spam. Not receiving an email notice by itself does not establish that your information was absent from the database.

What is known—and what Princeton has not established
- Known from Princeton’s account: The incident targeted a University Advancement database, used phone phishing to capture an employee’s login and gain approval of an attacker-initiated MFA prompt, and was blocked in less than 24 hours.
- Not established in the official material: Which individual records attackers viewed, how many people’s information was accessed, or whether a particular person’s information was misused.
Princeton’s FAQ says it had no information to share about a criminal investigation, no factual information connecting this incident to other university incidents, and no reason to believe the attack was politically motivated. It also reported no communication or demands from the attackers. The FAQ said the investigation could take several weeks; the official material cited here does not provide a later investigative outcome.

Use sound account and MFA practices
Princeton recommends using long, unique passwords, changing them regularly, and approving MFA prompts only when you initiated the sign-in. It also advises staying alert for phishing. These steps are general security practices, not a guarantee against every attack.
Do not assume your Princeton password was exposed
Princeton says its investigation found that passwords were not in the compromised database. The university has not said that readers must change Princeton passwords because of this incident. If you reused a password on other services, changing that reused password is a separate precaution.
