Absentia is the cancelled Prime Video thriller about an FBI agent who returns after being presumed dead—and it is now available to stream on Netflix in the United States. The series has three seasons and 30 episodes. Its Netflix debut produced a notable chart result in November 2025, but that ranking is historical, not a measure of its current standing.
What is Absentia about?
Stana Katic stars as Emily Byrne, an FBI agent who disappears while pursuing a serial killer and is presumed dead. Six years later, she is found alive with no memory of her captivity. Her husband has remarried and her son has grown up without her; as Emily tries to rebuild her life, a new string of murders draws her back into the mystery of who held her and why.

The psychological thriller ran from 2017 to 2020. It was originally a Prime Video exclusive in the United States, while airing internationally on AXN, according to What’s on Netflix.

When all three seasons arrived on Netflix on November 14, 2025, the series reached No. 3 on the service, Tom’s Guide reported on November 20, 2025. That makes “streaming sensation” fair as a description of its launch-period chart performance. The report gives no view count or duration at No. 3, so it does not establish how many people watched or how long the show stayed near the top.

Absentia has three seasons and 30 episodes, making it a finite series rather than an open-ended procedural. Tom’s Guide reports that the show was cancelled in 2021 and that its third season closes key storylines. A fourth season was considered, but the team did not find an idea that felt true to the story; the existing ending leaves some room for a future continuation.

In other words, the cancellation did not leave the entire three-season story without resolution, though the series does not shut the door on every possibility.
