If Prime Video subtitles are missing, first check whether that title offers the language you want. If it does, select the track from the playback controls; if the track is available but invisible, check your device’s caption settings and then troubleshoot playback. Amazon notes that subtitle availability and controls vary by title and device, so a missing language or button does not by itself mean your hardware is faulty.
First check whether the title has the subtitle track
Open the title’s details or overview and inspect its subtitle-language options. You can also start playback and look for the CC or subtitles control. Choose the exact language you want from the available tracks; turning captions on without selecting a track may not enable the one you expect.
If your preferred language is not listed, try another title that offers that language. If it appears there, the first title may simply lack that track. Amazon says subtitle and accessibility options vary across titles and devices, and does not publish a universal checklist covering every title in every market. Amazon’s connected-device subtitle instructions and Prime Video subtitle and caption help explain the available controls.

Choose a subtitle track from playback controls
- Start the video. If the controls are hidden, tap the screen on a phone or tablet. On a connected device, press Enter or the remote’s select button to reveal the playback menu if needed.
- Open the CC or subtitles icon.
- Select an available language track. Do not assume that tapping the icon alone has selected your preferred language.
Amazon lists subtitles or closed captions as supported in Prime Video apps for Android and iOS, but notes that features can differ by device model and configuration. Amazon’s web and mobile instructions cover the in-player control.

Tell a title-level issue from a device issue
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The language is missing on one title | Check that title’s available tracks, then compare with another title known to offer the language. The first title may not include it. |
| The track is listed but captions do not appear | Confirm that the track is selected, then check the device’s caption settings and try the playback checks below. |
| Captions fail across several titles on one device | Check the device-specific settings and app, then try the same title on another supported device or the Prime Video website. This comparison can help isolate the problem, but is not a guaranteed diagnostic test. |
| The same title fails on more than one device | It may be a title or track problem. Contact Prime Video support if the track is listed but still will not display. |
If the track exists but still will not display
Try these low-risk playback checks in order. Amazon lists them as general playback troubleshooting, not as guaranteed fixes for subtitle-only problems. Amazon’s playback troubleshooting guidance covers these steps.
- Close and reopen Prime Video. If you are watching in a browser, close and reopen the browser as well.
- Check that the device’s date and time are correct; enable automatic time if available.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy, if you use one, and test playback again.
- Restart the device.
- Install available device, app, or browser updates, then try the title again.
Additional checks for Fire TV playback problems
If Prime Video has broader streaming or app problems on Fire TV—not just missing captions—Amazon also recommends checking Fire TV software, restarting the device, and clearing the Prime Video app cache or data. Clearing data may require you to sign in again. If your video runs through an external display path and you have wider playback trouble, check HDMI/HDCP compatibility; it is not a specific subtitle fix. See Amazon’s Fire TV troubleshooting instructions.

When to contact support
If the desired language is absent from one title, report the issue as a possible title or track limitation rather than assuming the device is broken. If a listed track fails across several titles on one device, compare playback on another supported device or the Prime Video website, then contact Amazon Customer Service if the problem persists.
