When Premiere Pro seems to import only the first few seconds of a clip, the symptom alone does not reveal the cause. Three branches are worth checking, in this order: whether the clip’s duration is genuinely short in Premiere, whether its frame rate is being interpreted incorrectly, and whether the source uses a variable frame rate. A fourth branch, the source file itself, applies when the original is also short. Work through the checks below before changing any settings, because a short clip in the Project panel and a short segment in the sequence or playback view are different problems.
Confirm whether the clip itself is short
Start with the clip’s properties rather than the timeline. A timeline that stops after a few seconds can come from sequence settings or a playback view, while a clip whose recorded duration is short is an import or interpretation problem.
- In the Project panel, select the clip and open its Properties. Record the duration, frame rate, frame size, and pixel aspect ratio. Adobe’s current troubleshooting guidance names these properties as the first things to inspect.
- Play the original file in a separate media player and note whether it runs to the end.
- If the original plays in full but Premiere reports a short duration, move to the frame-rate and variable-frame-rate checks below. If the original is also short, or stops at the same point, the fault lies in the recording, the transfer, or the file, and Premiere is not the first place to look.
Choose a branch from what you observe
The table maps the most common observations to the likely cause and the next action. It is a triage aid, not a proof of cause; one clip may show more than one pattern.

| Original plays in full outside Premiere, but the Project-panel duration is short | Import settings, interpretation, or cache state | Check frame rate, then clear the media cache and reimport |
| Project-panel duration is full, but the timeline or Program monitor stops early | Sequence settings or playback display | Check sequence settings and playback resolution, and clear the cache if playback is choppy |

Correct a frame-rate mismatch with Interpret Footage
If Properties shows a frame rate that conflicts with what the device recorded, Premiere may be reading the clip at the wrong speed. Changing the interpreted rate also changes the clip’s total length. Adobe’s help article Change clip frame rate in Premiere, last updated January 7, 2026, gives this example: “if you set a 10-second, 24-fps clip to 48 fps, it becomes half as long, with a new duration of 5 seconds.”

To make the correction, select the clip in the Project panel, choose Modify > Interpret Footage, and set the frame rate to match the documented recording rate. Menu labels can differ between Premiere versions, so follow the current Adobe help article if the path does not match. Only correct a mismatch you can demonstrate from the file’s metadata or the device’s recording settings. Arbitrarily reinterpreting a clip to make it look longer can distort motion and sync.
Handle variable frame rate sources
Variable frame rate (VFR) footage records frames at timing that shifts over the recording. Adobe’s Community FAQ on VFR, dated January 22, 2019, defines it this way: “Variable frame rate (VFR) is a term for a video whose frame rate changes over time.” The same FAQ lists smartphones, webcams, gameplay recording, and screen-capture applications as typical sources, and warns that VFR playback can cause audio and video to fall out of sync.

VFR is a reasonable branch to test for those sources. It is not an established explanation for every short import, so treat it as one hypothesis among the others in the table above. Because the FAQ is from 2019, its version-specific menu steps may be out of date, so use current Adobe help for interface instructions.

- Convert the copy to a constant frame rate using a transcoding tool. Adobe’s guidance does not prescribe specific transcode settings, so match the resolution, frame rate, and audio sample rate to the footage.
- Import the converted copy and compare its Properties duration with the length of the original when played outside Premiere.
- Check audio sync at the start, middle, and end of the clip. Only use the converted copy in the project after both duration and sync check out.
Clear the media cache
Premiere generates cache files as it processes media, and Adobe’s guidance states that these files can be deleted and recreated. Cache problems are linked to choppy playback and poor performance, so clearing the cache is a sensible step when the symptom appears alongside those problems. Clearing the cache does not repair an invalid source file, and Adobe does not present it as a guaranteed fix for a truncated imported duration.

When the source file is the problem
If the original file is incomplete, corrupt, or has audio and video streams of different lengths, none of the steps above will restore the missing footage. The Adobe material cited here does not identify a file-specific defect or a universal codec or container fix, so do not apply one on a guess. Before changing the file, keep a copy of the original and gather the information needed to diagnose it:
- Premiere Pro version and operating system
- Properties for the clip, including duration, frame rate, frame size, and pixel aspect ratio
- Video and audio stream durations reported by a media information tool
- Whether the original plays in full in another player, and the point where it stops if it does not
With those details, the cause is much easier to narrow, and any remedy can be matched to the actual defect rather than to the symptom.
