To follow the Premier League title race, check the official table for points and matches played, then use the fixture and results listings to see what each contender has completed and what remains. Points decide the champion; goal difference and further tie-breaks separate clubs level on points.
How the Premier League title race works
The Premier League has 20 clubs, which play one another home and away for 380 matches in a season. A win earns three points, a draw one and a defeat none. The club with the most points at the end of the season wins the title. The Premier League’s format explainer sets out the competition structure.
How to read the Premier League table
The official table shows each club’s position, matches played, wins, draws, losses, goals for, goals against, goal difference, points, form and next match. Compare matches played as well as points: a club with fewer matches may have an opportunity to close a gap, but a game in hand is not points already earned.
- Points: The main measure of a club’s position in the race.
- Played: The number of matches completed. Check this before comparing teams with different schedules.
- Goal difference: Goals scored minus goals conceded. It can decide the order of teams level on points.
- Goals for and against: These figures show the scoring totals behind the goal-difference figure.
- Next match and form: Useful context, but neither changes the points already earned.
Use the official Premier League table for the live standings. A standings snapshot should always be labelled with its matchweek and date: after Matchweek 5 on 19 September 2026, Manchester City had 15 points and Arsenal had 12, but that is an earlier snapshot, not the table for 4 October.

How ties on points are decided
When clubs finish level on points, the Premier League applies its tie-break criteria in this order:
- Goal difference.
- Goals scored.
- Points won in head-to-head matches between the tied clubs.
- Away goals scored in those head-to-head matches.
If teams competing for the title remain inseparable after those criteria, they may play a one-off match at a neutral venue. The league’s 14 May 2026 tie-break explainer says no such playoff had occurred in Premier League history by that date.
