Prediction markets and sportsbooks can both let you take a position on a game, but they price and settle that position differently. On a prediction market, participants buy or sell event contracts at available market prices; on a sportsbook, the operator offers odds and sets the wager’s payout terms. To compare them fairly, look at the same outcome and stake, then account for fees, the price you can actually get, early-exit options, settlement rules, and the laws that apply where you are.

How the two products work

Prediction-market event contracts

A prediction market lists contracts tied to a defined event or outcome. A common format is a yes/no contract: if the contract’s stated condition is met, it pays according to its terms; otherwise it does not. Customers may buy or sell contracts, and the price reflects trading among market participants. The CFTC describes prediction-market contracts as contracts based on whether events stated in them occur in its customer guidance.

Sportsbook wagers

A sportsbook offers a wager at odds it sets. Those odds specify the payout if the selected outcome wins, subject to the sportsbook’s rules. The sportsbook, rather than a live market price between participants, establishes the quoted price and terms for the wager.

The distinction is about how the position is priced and traded, not whether one is automatically safer or more accurate. Both expose customers to financial loss.

How to read prices and odds

Event-contract prices as implied probabilities

A yes/no contract may trade between $0 and $1. If a yes contract is offered at $0.63 and pays $1 if it resolves yes, traders may use 63% as a shorthand implied probability. That is a price-derived estimate—not a guarantee that the event has a 63% chance of happening, nor necessarily the price at which a particular customer can buy a desired quantity. Fees, the bid-ask spread, market depth, and the contract’s remaining time can all affect the actual trade.

Sportsbook odds as offered payouts

Sportsbook odds state the return for a wager under the book’s terms. For example, odds of +150 on a $10 stake would produce $15 in winnings, plus the returned stake, if the wager wins. That payout does not by itself establish the outcome’s true probability. When converting odds into an implied probability, account for the format and remember that a set of offered prices can include a sportsbook margin.

These numbers are not directly comparable at a glance: one is a tradable contract price, while the other is a sportsbook’s quoted payout. The useful comparison is the net payout for the same outcome, stake, and settlement conditions.

Calibration is not guaranteed

Market prices can be informative without being perfectly calibrated probabilities. A July 2026 working paper by Niusha Moshrefi analyzed 23 million moneyline trades across major sports leagues on Kalshi and reported that probability calibration varied with time to expiry. In that paper’s sample, cross-game parlay prices were above the product of contemporaneous leg prices, with the difference increasing as the number of legs grew. These are findings from that study’s dataset and methodology, not established rules for every market or parlay. Read the working paper.

How fees and pricing affect the cost

There is no universal fee percentage that makes prediction markets cheaper than sports betting. The available official terms do not establish a directly comparable general figure for total event-contract fees, sportsbook hold, consumer losses, or odds accuracy. Compare the actual terms for the specific trade rather than a headline fee or a displayed price.

  • On a prediction market: check commissions, transaction fees, and any other account or market charges. The CFTC advises customers to review commissions, fees, penalties, and other costs associated with a trade in its customer guidance.
  • At a sportsbook: the quoted odds determine the offered payout, so compare the net return for the same stake and outcome. Bet terms and any explicit charges can also affect the result.
  • For either option: include the amount at risk, the payout if correct, and any cost of entering or closing the position. Comparing an exchange’s visible fee with a sportsbook’s odds alone omits part of the price.

A Coalition for Prediction Markets representative argued in written Senate testimony that sportsbook customers face odds set by the house, while prediction-market participants trade with one another and the platform earns transaction fees. That is industry testimony describing a business-model distinction, not a regulator’s or court’s finding about every platform or wager. Read the testimony.

What happens if you want to exit early?

Prediction markets

CFTC guidance says customers may trade out of a position before settlement at the then-current market price. An available exit is not a guaranteed fair-price buyback: the price may have moved against you, and there may not be enough liquidity at the displayed price for the quantity you want to sell. Selling can therefore lock in a loss.

Sportsbooks

A sportsbook may offer a cash-out on a particular wager, but availability and price depend on the operator and bet. Treat it as a separate offer, not as a guaranteed way to recover the original stake or preserve a profit.

Settlement rules and risks to check

The event description is part of the financial terms. A prediction-market contract’s wording, payout, settlement method, and decision-maker determine what counts as a winning outcome. A sportsbook’s house rules govern its wager. Rules may matter in situations such as a postponed game, a statistical correction, or an outcome that is ambiguous under the wording.

  • Read the exact contract or wager rules, including how postponements and cancellations are handled.
  • Check which source or procedure determines the result and whether corrections can change settlement.
  • Understand the maximum amount you can lose and how fees affect the final result.
  • For a tradable contract, consider liquidity and price movement as well as the event outcome itself.

Market integrity is another risk. On February 25, 2026, the CFTC issued an enforcement advisory describing cases involving misuse of nonpublic information and fraud tied to event contracts traded on KalshiEX. The advisory also affirmed the Commission’s authority to police prohibited trading practices on designated contract markets; it does not mean every market is free of misconduct. Read the CFTC advisory.

How U.S. regulation differs—and why location matters

Sportsbooks generally operate under state gaming frameworks where authorized. Prediction markets offered by CFTC-regulated designated contract markets fall within the federal derivatives framework, but the treatment of sports event contracts has been contested. A federal regulatory label should not be treated as a blanket answer to every legal dispute or as proof that a platform is available to every customer in every state.

On March 16, 2026, the CFTC published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking seeking public comment on prediction-market derivatives, public-interest exclusions, and related issues. The notice’s comment deadline was April 30, 2026; the notice itself was not a final rule. The Associated Press has reported disputes between prediction-market platforms and states, along with continuing legal challenges and regulatory uncertainty. Check the relevant jurisdiction’s current rules and the platform’s own eligibility terms before acting; availability and terms can change. Read the CFTC notice and the AP overview.

A practical comparison before taking a position

  1. Match the outcome. Make sure the event contract and sportsbook wager refer to the same result and use compatible settlement conditions.
  2. Compare the price you can actually get. For a contract, check its available buy or sell price and quantity; for a wager, use the sportsbook’s current odds and payout terms.
  3. Calculate net cost and return. Include explicit fees and the total amount at risk. Do not treat an implied probability as a guaranteed forecast.
  4. Check the exit and settlement terms. Identify whether an early exit is offered, how it is priced, and who determines the final outcome.
  5. Verify eligibility and applicable rules. Confirm that the product is available to you and understand the platform or sportsbook terms for your jurisdiction.
