This is a prediction, not a fact, and it is currently behind. At the October 6, 2026 close, StockAnalysis put Apple’s market capitalization at about $4.87 trillion and Microsoft’s at about $3.93 trillion. That is an Apple lead of roughly $0.94 trillion. Microsoft would have to beat Apple by a wide margin over the next 14 months to finish 2027 ahead. It is possible, but nothing published so far settles it.
Where the two companies stand
These figures are third-party estimates from StockAnalysis for the October 6, 2026 close. They are not official financial statements, and they move every trading day.

The $0.94 trillion gap is simple subtraction of two rounded numbers, not a published statistic.

What Microsoft has to do to win
Market cap is share price multiplied by shares outstanding. Both companies’ share counts change slowly, mainly through buybacks and stock compensation. So the contest is mostly about relative share-price performance. This is my own arithmetic, ignoring share-count changes:

- Apple’s market cap is about 24% larger than Microsoft’s. Microsoft’s stock must outperform Apple’s by about that much to draw level.
- From October 6, 2026 to December 31, 2027 is roughly 1.2 years. That implies Microsoft outperforming Apple by about 19% a year.

The table measures from the October 6 prices and is illustrative. It says nothing about which scenario is likely. It does show that Microsoft’s best route is a mix of its own gains and an Apple stall, not Microsoft alone.
The case for Microsoft
Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 results, announced July 29, 2026 (fiscal year ended June 30, 2026), are strong:

- Revenue was $331.8 billion, up 18%.
- Microsoft Cloud revenue was $214.4 billion, up 27%. Its 10-K shows $168.9 billion in fiscal 2025 and $137.7 billion in fiscal 2024.
- Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 41%.
This is the bull case in one line: cloud growth is compounding, and AI demand runs through Azure. But these are past results. They don’t show how durable or profitable future AI-related demand will be. They also don’t show how much infrastructure spending the growth will require.

The case that Apple holds its lead
Apple is not standing still. For its fiscal third quarter ended June 27, 2026, reported July 30, 2026, Apple posted revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16%. Diluted EPS was $2.02, up 29%. Apple described it as a June-quarter record for revenue and EPS, with growth across iPhone, Mac, Services and every geographic segment.

Tim Cook said in the earnings release: “Today, Apple is proud to report our strongest June quarter ever, with double-digit revenue growth across iPhone, Mac and Services, and in every geographic segment.” That is a company executive’s characterization, not independent evidence.
Don’t compare Microsoft’s annual revenue growth with Apple’s single-quarter growth as if they were the same measurement. They cover different periods. Compare the same fiscal windows once both companies have reported them.

What would decide the outcome
- Cloud and AI monetization: whether Microsoft’s growth turns into lasting profit after capacity spending.
- Apple’s growth drivers: whether the iPhone, Mac and Services momentum from the June quarter continues.
- Margins and capital returns: buybacks, dividends and dilution at each company. Nothing cited here is enough to forecast them.
- Valuation multiples: market cap reflects what investors will pay for expected future cash flows. Faster reported growth does not automatically earn a larger valuation, and a company already priced for strong growth can fall on a disappointment.
A reporting change to watch
In a Form 8-K dated September 2, 2026, Microsoft said that from fiscal 2027 it will manage and report performance under two segments: “Agents and Infra” and “Devices and Consumer.” Segment figures after the change won’t line up neatly with earlier periods. Check for restated prior-period numbers before judging trends.
How to track the prediction
- Pick one market-data source and one close date, and use both for every comparison.
- Compare market caps and the percentage gap, not just the dollar gap.
- Match fiscal periods when reading earnings. Microsoft’s fiscal year ends June 30, and Apple’s fiscal year ends in late September.
- Read the 10-Q, 10-K and earnings calls for spending, margins and buybacks, not just revenue headlines.
The Bottom Line
As of October 6, 2026, Microsoft trails Apple by about $0.94 trillion. Overtaking it by the end of 2027 would take roughly 19% a year of relative outperformance. Microsoft’s cloud growth makes the call plausible, but Apple’s record June quarter and the size of the gap make it a long shot, not a safe bet. This is analysis, not investment advice.
